Job description

Job Description
What is the opportunity?

Join our Data Platform Engineering team to build and operate the enterprise data transformation layer powered by Starburst Trino and DBT. You will be part of the platform team that enables analytics teams across the organization to access trusted, well-modeled data at scale. Beyond maintaining infrastructure, you will develop internal tooling in Python, Java or TypeScript to automate workflows, improve developer experience, and expand self-service capabilities, directly shaping how consumers interact with data and driving measurable improvements to platform reliability, performance, and adoption.

What will you do?
  • Operate and evolve Starburst Trino cluster configurations, including query optimization, cost governance, catalog management, and security policy enforcement.

  • Build internal tooling and platform capabilities in Java and/or Python and/or TypeScript to automate operational workflows, enhance self-service data access, and improve the overall consumer experience.

  • Manage CI/CD pipelines and container-based deployments using GitHub Actions, and Kustomize/OCP to ensure reliable, repeatable releases across environments.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into data architecture decisions - including materialization strategies, access controls, and pipeline orchestration design.

  • Monitor production data pipelines and orchestration schedules within Dagster, troubleshoot failures, and maintain adherence to operational SLAs and service standards.

  • Identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and platform capability enhancements that reduce manual effort and accelerate time-to-insight for consumers.

  • Foster relationships with analytics consumers, infrastructure partners, and leadership to drive platform adoption and champion data engineering best practices.

What do you need to succeed?
Must Have
  • SQL proficiency with hands-on experience writing and optimizing queries in distributed query engines (Trino, Presto, or similar).

  • Proficiency in Python or Typescript with experience building scripts, CLI tools, or automation for data platform operations.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, containerized deployments, and GitOps workflows (GitHub Actions, Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift).

  • Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and data quality practices.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Exposure to data lakehouse architectures, object storage (S3), and catalog technologies (Hive Metastore, Iceberg).

Nice to Have
  • Experience building and maintaining data transformation pipelines using DBT (model design, testing, macros, documentation).

  • Experience with TypeScript and building internal web-based tooling or developer-facing UIs.

  • Familiarity with pipeline orchestration frameworks such as Dagster.

  • Experience with Starburst Enterprise or Starburst Galaxy specifically, including role-based access control and cluster tuning.
