What Is the Opportunity?

Provides cost-effective, high-quality legal advice and translation services while representing Travelers and internal clients. Working under minimal supervision, the employee is responsible for providing accurate and timely legal advice and translations (from English to French) to meet business needs. This position reports to the Senior Counsel, Bond & Specialty Insurance.

What Will You Do?
  • Provide legal advice to business clients on applicable laws, statutes, regulations, or court decisions in Quebec.
  • Collaborate with internal compliance partners to oversee compliance with Quebec laws.
  • Identify and communicate risks to internal customers, offering mitigation recommendations.
  • Develop, negotiate, implement, and manage legal solutions proactively.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal clients in the Montreal office and beyond.
  • Prepare legal documents, correspondence, and memoranda to protect legal interests.
  • Stay informed about judicial climate, case law, trends, and emerging issues in Quebec, and educate colleagues and clients accordingly.
  • Support local business units with product initiatives and Quebec-specific coverage advice.
  • Translate complex or sensitive texts into French, adhering to Quebec's French Language Charter and industry standards.
  • Review and edit translations, provide final approval, and support staff in drafting texts. Adapt to process changes and suggest improvements.
  • Communicate promptly if deadlines are at risk.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • Minimum of seven years’ relevant insurance and litigation experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Quebec's legal, regulatory, and litigation environment.
  • Knowledge of property/casualty insurance, coverage, products, and services.
  • Excellent bilingual skills in English and French, both written and oral.
  • Sense of urgency and proactive approach.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure, as well as part of a team.
  • Strong relationship-building skills at senior levels.
  • Ability to clearly articulate legal issues to various stakeholders.
What Is a Must Have?
  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • Admitted to the Bar of Quebec.
  • At least 7 years of legal, technical, and administrative translation experience.
  • Bilingual in French and English.
