Job Description

As a Senior Counsel, you will be a key member of the Global Corporate Real Estate Law Team. You will provide advice and strategic guidance to the Royal Bank of Canada Global Corporate Real Estate Team and its business partners on transactional and operational corporate real estate matters, including leasing, disposition, construction, and environmental issues. You will play a strategic role in developing tools to manage and mitigate legal risks associated with RBC’s corporate real estate portfolio.

What will you do?

  • Provide accurate and tailored legal advice to RBC’s corporate real estate team and stakeholders on legal risks and mitigation strategies across RBC’s global real estate portfolio, including:
    • Transactional legal support on high-risk leasing transactions, dispositions, and real property aspects of M&A transactions;
    • Legal guidance on construction-related issues and disputes;
    • Support litigation, mediation, and arbitration concerning RBC’s corporate real estate.
  • Offer strategic legal guidance on operational risks, including third-party supplier arrangements, complex contract interpretation, and regulatory matters related to commercial real estate;
  • Draft, review, negotiate commercial real estate agreements, and develop templates and legal content;
  • Collaborate with the legal team to design and deliver legal training to business partners;
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders to ensure compliance with enterprise legal guidelines.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Law degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited law school;
  • Call to the Bar of a Canadian province/territory and in good standing with the law society;
  • 8+ years’ experience in commercial real estate law, including drafting and negotiating at a top-tier law firm or major real estate corporation;
  • Ability to analyze legal risk within business contexts, exercise sound judgment, and advise effectively;
  • Strong expertise in commercial real estate, leasing, and transaction management;
  • Ability to work independently, handle large volumes of work, and manage competing demands;
  • Solid knowledge of commercial contract laws and terms;
  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach.

Nice-to-have

  • In-house experience at a large, multinational bank or real estate firm;
  • Excellent presentation skills (written and verbal);
  • Continuous improvement mindset.
