What you’ll be doing

As the Senior Consultant, Business Controls, you’ll join our Business Controls team reporting to the Director, Business Controls – CAO. You’ll work in a growing area of the bank that manages operational risk for the Chief Administrative Office (CAO). As part of the Business Controls, within the 1B Governance Group, you will support the Line of Business (LOB) in meeting governance, risk, and control activities by executing requirements within the Control Framework to identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor risks, and ensure compliance with regulatory and operational requirements. This includes Control and Deficiency management, Audit and Examination support, Change Initiative and Risk Assessment Process, Regulatory Group Topic (RGT) Risk Assessments, Risk and Control Self-Assessment (RCSA), Reputation and Legal Risk Committee process management, and other ad hoc reviews and assessments.

At CIBC, we enable an optimal work environment for you to thrive. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your activities within a hybrid work arrangement, spending 1-3 days per week on-site and working remotely on other days.

How you’ll succeed
  • Control and Deficiency Management Execution: Communicate the Control Framework requirements to LOB partners. Develop, implement, document, and maintain Key and Non-Key Controls for LoBs. Develop and recommend updates to Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities (KAR) and formal control testing programs. Summarize control testing results for review and sign-off. Serve as the SOX Officer/Maintenance Officer (SOMO), managing deficiencies and risk items, overseeing activities in eGRC, and liaising with governance partners. Create sustainability action plans, test steps, and questions for Sustainability Testing. Maintain deficiency information to support accurate reporting.

  • Change Initiative Risk Assessment (CIRA): Support the SBU CIRA Committee operations and administration. Review CIRAs for quality and completeness before presentation, distribute to stakeholders, and track action items to closure.

  • Risk Consulting: Act as a risk and control SME, providing advice on internal audits, compliance exams, and GORM reviews. Manage self-assessment processes and participate in projects to identify risks and develop control requirements. Lead the Reputation and Legal Risk process ensuring material risks are identified and compliant with policies.

  • Analytical Skills: Analyze data to identify risk exposures, control gaps, and operational losses. Assess deficiencies and recommend mitigation strategies.

  • Influence and Negotiation: Mentor peers, influence, coach, and negotiate with LOB and other defense lines. Ensure compliance with policies and standards.

  • Relationship Management: Manage relationships with business partners and risk stakeholders, keeping senior management informed of risks and mitigation strategies. Develop and deliver risk reports.

Who you are
  • Experience: In compliance, risk, business controls, or audit roles. Knowledge of deficiency management and CIRA policies in Canadian Banking. Project management experience is a plus.

  • Proactive: Make decisions that benefit today and tomorrow. Seek new opportunities and define possibilities.

  • Detail-oriented: Notice details others might miss. Use critical thinking to inform decisions.

  • Client-focused: Engage purposefully to find solutions. Go the extra mile for clients.
