Job Description:

We are looking to welcome a new colleague to join an enthusiastic, motivated, and supportive Emergency Department team at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, opened in 2012, with an annual attendance of 68,000, including 25% paediatric cases.

Main Purpose of the Role:

  • Support the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate education within the emergency department.
  • Ensure critical delivery components through coordination and facilitation.
  • Flexible delivery of education.
  • Engage in personal development related to medical education.
  • Develop understanding of educational theory and teaching methodology, potentially complementing PGCE or PGDE.
  • Continue clinical development and contribute to patient care.

The post is aimed at clinicians 4 years post-foundation wishing to broaden clinical experience, deliver high-quality teaching, and receive training in Emergency Medicine. 60% of the time will be clinical care, with the remaining 40% supporting educational and medical student programs, including workplace-based and simulation training for various medical students and junior doctors.

You will work alongside other specialty trainees in Emergency Medicine from the South East and East of Scotland, on a rota providing 24-hour middle-grade cover under consultant supervision, including overnight and weekend shifts. Responsibilities include initial patient assessment and management, supervising FY2s and GPSTs, and opportunities to develop observational medicine and ultrasound skills.

Senior fellows participate in patient assessment, management, supervision, and support of junior staff, with opportunities for observational medicine and participation in ward rounds.

The department features various bays and rooms, including resuscitation, majors, minors, paediatric consulting rooms, a procedures room, and an observation unit. It has access to electronic pathology and radiology, and departmental protocols are accessible online. The department performs well in sepsis, stroke thrombolysis, and 4-hour target compliance.

The Emergency Department operates 24/7 with 21 consultant physicians (18.5 WTE), daily presence from 0800 to 2300, and support from GPwSIs and ENPs, including a 24-hour ENP-led Minor Injuries Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

Applications from those seeking flexible working are encouraged.
