Job summary

Stantec’s Energy & Resources Civil Delivery Center seeks a Senior Civil Engineer to lead and deliver civil design for power and transmission projects, including substations, in Western Canada. You will guide EOR activities, coordinate with electrical and structural teams, and ensure safe, constructible designs for grid modernization.

You will mentor staff, support proposals, and collaborate across North America and our Global Delivery Center to deliver high-quality results.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive civil engineering and design experience, including delivery of complex, multidisciplinary projects.
• Minimum of 3 years leading design teams or serving as discipline lead on multidisciplinary projects.

Stantec’s Energy & Resources Civil Delivery Center is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to provide technical leadership and project delivery across a broad portfolio of projects. In this role, you will lead and support multidisciplinary civil design efforts, including site, earthworks, drainage, utility, and linear infrastructure design, along with civil coordination across related disciplines.

This role requires an experienced engineer who can manage scope, schedule, budget, and quality; mentor developing staff; support proposals and pursuits; and work collaboratively with project teams, clients, and delivery partners. You will regularly collaborate with engineers, designers, and technical specialists across North America and Stantec’s Global Delivery Center, supporting integrated project delivery and high-quality design solutions.

Your Opportunity

For this requisition, we are specifically seeking candidates with experience in civil design for Power & Transmission projects, including substations and/or transmission infrastructure, primarily in support of an

ongoing BC Hydro transmission and distribution program. In this role you will lead the civil scope for these facilities: site grading and earthwork, drainage, site access, underground duct banks, foundation coordination, oil containment, security fencing, vehicle access and other civil tasks as required. You will coordinate closely with the electrical, structural, and geotechnical disciplines to develop practical, constructible, and reliable designs that support grid modernization, renewables integration, and the expansion of power delivery infrastructure.

This focus reflects the primary need for this requisition, but it does not define the full scope of the role. As part of the Civil Delivery Center, you will also have opportunities to support a broad range of Energy & Resources projects, including mining, oil and gas, dams and hydropower, renewables, and related infrastructure. We work to align assignments with business needs and your areas of interest.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Follow safe work practices and comply with Stantec and client health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) policies and procedures; ensure applicable safety codes, regulations, and guidelines are addressed through appropriate design.

• Serve as the Engineer of Record (EOR) on complex projects, evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering civil systems and site designs.

• Lead substation site civil design as EOR, including yard grading and earthwork, drainage and stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, surfacing, transformer containment, and perimeter security.

• Lay out duct banks, cable trenches, site access and laydown areas, resolving conflicts with foundations, grounding, and buried electrical services and other utilities while accommodating equipment delivery and maintenance access. Lead utility conflict assessments; plan and support daylighting investigations, utility locating programs, field verification, and as-built reviews; and coordinate with municipalities, telecommunication providers, transportation authorities, and other utility owners to reduce design uncertainty, resolve conflicts, and obtain required approvals. Lead civil design for underground electrical distribution infrastructure, including duct banks, vaults/manholes, service boxes, junction boxes, transformer foundations, utility crossings, and associated civil works in accordance with utility owner standards and project requirements. Develop clear and complete scopes of work for civil engineering projects, including the civil works relevant to this opportunity, and manage project scope, budget, staffing, schedule, discipline quantities, and cost estimates.

• Identify and manage technical risks, recognize out-of-scope work early, and support timely change management.

• Lead civil design teams in preparing coordinated design packages, construction documents, engineering reports, calculations, technical specifications, and design criteria; provide technical direction and check work for accuracy and completeness. Coordinate with related disciplines, clients, contractors, subconsultants, and vendors to optimize layouts, constructability, quality, and integrated project delivery.

• Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews on your projects and those of your peers in accordance with Stantec’s quality management guidelines. Provide post-design and construction-phase support, including review of RFIs, contractor inquiries, shop drawings, field changes, and non-conformance reports, along with constructability and lessons-learned reviews.

• Build and maintain trusted client relationships by ensuring project scope and expectations are clearly understood and met.

• Support proposals and pursuits by developing discipline estimates, technical approaches, and staffing input.

• Mentor and develop staff, and promote collaboration across business lines, offices, and geographies, including our Global Delivery Center.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in any Canadian province or territory, with the ability to obtain registration in additional jurisdictions as required.

• Strong knowledge of civil engineering systems, means and methods, materials, and applicable codes and industry standards.

• Demonstrated experience with substation and/or transmission line civil design, including typical power delivery civil deliverables and their interfaces with the electrical and structural disciplines.

• Working knowledge of utility and client-specific design standards, with the ability to adapt civil deliverables to owner drawing, numbering, and documentation requirements. Utility experience is required; specific experience with BC Hydro is an asset.

• Demonstrated ability to lead blended, multi-office design teams through all phases of project document production, and to manage multiple concurrent projects to budget and schedule.

• Proven QA/QC skills, with demonstrated experience reviewing and checking engineering deliverables.

• Required proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD, the Microsoft Office Suite, and PDF review tools such as Bluebeam or Adobe Acrobat.

• Experience with additional programs such as ArcGIS, Global Mapper, ProjectWise, or Forma is an asset.

• Exceptional technical writing, organizational, and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.

• Strong presentation and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to collaborate across offices and disciplines.

• Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions in both office and project site settings.

• Willingness and ability to travel occasionally for field and project work is preferred.

Education and Experience

• This role is preferably based in a Stantec office or follows a hybrid schedule combining office and remote work.

• A full-time work-from-home arrangement may be considered for the right person.

Pay Range:

Locations in Lower Mainland - BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario-$113,800.00 - $170,800.00 Annually

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
