Job summary

GHD in Ontario is seeking a Senior Civil Designer / Senior Civil Technologist to join our team. You will lead civil design, modelling, and drafting for municipal infrastructure, land development, roads, drainage, and services, using Civil 3D and AutoCAD.

The role is office-based across Markham and surrounding cities with opportunities to participate in site visits and construction support. The ideal candidate has 10–12 years of relevant experience and a strong command of Civil 3D and AutoCAD.

Qualifications

• 10–12 years of relevant experience in civil engineering design, municipal infrastructure, land development, earthworks, or related fields.
• Strong working knowledge of Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
• Experience preparing servicing plans, grading plans, earthworks models, and construction drawings.

Who are we looking for?
Due to continued growth, we are seeking a Senior Civil Designer / Senior Civil Technologist to join our team. This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of municipal infrastructure, subdivision, land development, site development, road, grading, servicing, drainage, stormwater management, and earthworks projects throughout Ontario.
The successful candidate will play a senior, hands-on design role in the development of civil engineering designs, models, and construction documentation using Civil 3D and AutoCAD. Working closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams, the successful candidate will support projects from concept development through detailed design and construction.
This position is intended for an experienced civil designer who can independently develop practical and technically sound designs based on verbal direction, engineering criteria, preliminary concepts, markups, survey information, and project requirements. Designs will remain subject to review and approval by the responsible professional engineer.
The role is primarily office-based (Markham, Mississauga, Whitby, Toronto or Ottawa) and design-focused, with occasional opportunities to participate in project meetings, site visits, and construction support activities.
Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
Civil Design, Modelling, and Drafting

• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, Civil 3D models, and construction documentation using Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
• Import, manage, and review survey, LiDAR, GIS, orthophoto, utility, and other spatial data used to develop existing-condition and proposed design surfaces.
• Review survey information and existing-condition models for completeness, inconsistencies, potential errors, and suitability for design.
• Independently develop and coordinate civil designs, Civil 3D models, and supporting design documentation from survey information, preliminary concepts, markups, and project requirements, in accordance with project and company standards and under the direction of the Engineer of Record.
• Prepare, develop, and manage civil engineering designs, Civil 3D models, drawing packages, quantity take-offs, and construction documentation for municipal infrastructure, land development, subdivision, grading, drainage, servicing, and earthworks projects through all project phases, from concept design through construction and record drawing updates.
• Prepare plan and profile drawings for roads, sewers, watermains, and other linear infrastructure.
• Complete preliminary pipe sizing, slope analysis, cover checks, crossing reviews, and servicing coordination under the direction of the Engineer of Record.
• Assistance with the preparation of technical calculations, design summaries, reports, memoranda, and regulatory submissions considered an asset.
  

Project Support

• Assist project managers with quantity estimates and budgeting (proposal) support considered an asset.
• Review design changes and assess their potential impacts on grading, servicing, earthworks, quantities, drawing production, and project coordination.
• Assist with construction administration and contractor coordination activities as required.
• Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external clients to support project delivery.
  

Field Support

• Build your technical skills in a primarily office-based role focused on civil design, drafting, and project documentation, while contributing to a collaborative project team. For those interested, optional field opportunities may include site visits, inspections, construction observations, and other project support activities.Training, guidance, and mentoring are available to help you develop confidence in both office-based responsibilities and any field assignments you choose to pursue, including environmental monitoring, site investigations, and land surveying.
• Depending on project needs and individual interests, opportunities may exist to support environmental monitoring programs, site investigations, and other field assignments.
• Support the resolution of civil design and constructability issues identified during construction.
  

What you will bring to the Team:

• Civil Engineering Technology Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in Ontario, or a comparable combination of civil design education and directly relevant experience..
• 10-12 years of relevant experience (minimum) in civil engineering design, municipal infrastructure, land development, earthworks, or related fields.
• Strong working knowledge of Civil 3D and AutoCAD.
• Demonstrated experience preparing servicing plans, grading plans, earthworks models, and construction drawings.
