Job summary

WSP in Ontario is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Bridge Team, based in Thunder Bay or Sudbury. You will lead design, analysis and coordination for federal, provincial and municipal bridges, while guiding project teams across Canada.

You should be a licensed PE with 7–12 years of Canadian experience, capable of mentoring staff and delivering high‑quality, code‑compliant designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • PE license in Canada essential for this role.
  • Master's in Structural Engineering is an asset.
  • Experience leading bridge design teams in Canada preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preliminary and detailed design of complex bridges and culverts.

The Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking a Senior Engineer who has the interest and drive to join our Ontario Bridge Team, based in either our Thunder Bay or Sudbury office. We believe WSP has assembled the best and most vibrant bridge engineering group in Canada with teams based throughout the country. As such, we are looking for someone with an interest in taking on the most interesting bridge work Canada has to offer.

Reporting to the Thunder Bay Bridge Engineering Manager, this position will be responsible for the preliminary and detailed design of bridges and other civil structures for federal, provincial and municipal clients in Ontario and Canada. If you’re interested in working on some of the largest projects in Canada, this is the perfect opportunity to join our collaborative design team.

Our Bridge Team is a highly qualified group experienced in bridge planning, new design, rehabilitation design, inspection, evaluation, and project administration that collaborates with other teams based in Ontario and the rest of Canada, sharing work and knowledge. Our senior staff have published numerous technical papers on bridge design, rehabilitation and construction, and continue to be active on a range of technical and bridge code committees. The firm is proud of its reputation for leadership in the bridge engineering field and of it has been recognized by receiving several major awards for unique and challenging bridge designs.

Your Impact
  • Lead the preliminary and detailed design of complex bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other civil structures for all levels of government
  • Perform and coordinate structural analysis and design
  • Manage bridge engineering projects, coordinate design teams, and support project management and technical teams across WSP
  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications and reports
  • Provide QA/QC and peer-review services for designs and drawings
  • Review shop drawings and provide engineering support during construction
  • Contribute to proposal development and technical write-ups
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to intermediate and junior engineers, support staff, contractors, and/or vendors
  • Demonstrate sound written, verbal, interpersonal, analytical and application skills
  • Work well under pressure to meet project deadlines
Skills that set you apart
  • University degree in Civil Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (licensed with PEO) with 7-12 years demonstrated experience in structural design and bridge engineering in Canada
  • Masters degree in Structural Engineering is considered an asset
  • Ability to work and converse in French is considered an asset
  • Superior technical understanding, design abilities, and up‑to‑date knowledge of current bridge technologies
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software used in bridge design and assessment
  • Specific areas of expertise required are in the planning, preliminary and detail design, and construction of bridges of standard and complex geometry, and culverts. A thorough knowledge of current Canadian design codes and standards is essential
  • Experience with inspection, assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures
  • Experienced in report and proposal writing
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work on several projects at a time with multiple design teams
  • A committed team player with a willingness to help others and collaborate with team members
  • A valid driver's license

Compensation

AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $114600 - $151 800
MB & ON: $104500 - $143 900
NB, NL, NS, PE & QC: $103500 - $137 400
