Position: Senior Blockchain Security Engineer
- Location: Remote – Canada
- Type: Full-time
- Pay: $191,100 CAD + bonus + equity + benefits
The Mission
This role sits in Coinbase’s Protocol Security team — responsible for ensuring users interact safely with blockchain technologies. You’ll help secure L1s, L2s, DeFi protocols, staking mechanisms, and anything onchain.
This isn’t just auditing smart contracts — it’s about leading security strategies, building tools and frameworks, and mentoring engineers to keep Coinbase and its customers safe as they expand into Web3.
- Threat Modeling & Security Assessments: Deep dive into new and existing onchain protocols to uncover risks.
- Strategy & Best Practices: Develop Coinbase-wide approaches to onchain security.
- Tooling & Frameworks: Contribute to or lead the development of security tooling for protocol assessments.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Guide junior security engineers; build a crypto-forward culture of learning.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Interface with product and engineering teams to implement your findings into real-world security improvements.
- 3+ years of smart contract auditing and deep familiarity with vulnerabilities (e.g., reentrancy, MEV, oracle manipulation, etc.).
- Expert-level knowledge of blockchain ecosystems — Ethereum, Solana, L2s, DeFi, staking, etc.
- The ability to dissect machine-, transaction-, and logic-level issues.
- Leadership skills: You’ve led audits, mentored peers, and influenced security decisions at scale.
- Experience working closely with engineering/product teams in a collaborative, strategic way.
- A continuous learner’s mindset — crypto evolves fast, and you’re excited to evolve with it.
- Contributions to security tooling, open-source analysis frameworks, or industry security research.
- Familiarity with formal verification, fuzzing tools, or static analysis for smart contracts.
- Comfort working in high-stakes environments (like financial infrastructure or mission-critical apps).
How to Position Yourself
Here are some ideas to help tailor your resume, cover letter, or interview prep:
- Show off complex protocol audits you’ve led — include the protocol name if it’s public.
- Mention any tools or frameworks you’ve built or contributed to (even internally).
- Share your thought process on assessing risk at multiple layers: contract, protocol, business logic.
- If you’ve mentored or upskilled junior engineers in this space — highlight that leadership.
- Demonstrate a clear passion for the intersection of security and DeFi/Web3.
Why This Role Stands Out
- You shape the future of onchain security, not just react to issues.
- Work with one of the most security-forward crypto teams globally.
- Massive impact opportunity: your work will directly affect user safety and protocol trustworthiness.
- Coinbase pays competitively and offers great equity for top technical talent.
