Job description

Uchucklesaht Tribe Government (UTG) is a dynamic and progressive Maa-Nulth First Nation located

on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. UTG has been self governing since treaty came into affect on

April 1, 2011.

The Senior Biologist will lead environmental planning, habitat assessment, restoration, fisheries and

wildlife management, and regulatory processes. They will also collaborate with leadership,

community members, and external partners to develop conservation strategies aligned with our

Nation’s values and priorities.

This position provides opportunities to :

  • Lead biological assessments and conservation planning.
  • Provide expert advice on resource management.
  • Develop environmental monitoring programs.
  • Conduct research on species at risk and climate change adaptation.
  • Develop policies and prepare technical reports.
  • Integrate Indigenous knowledge with Western science.
  • Represent UTG in discussions with governments and organizations.
  • Manage project budgets, contracts, and timelines.
  • Identify and apply for funding opportunities.
  • Mentor Nation staff and community members.

Qualifications and Experience :

  • Masters Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist with the College of Applied Biologists of
  • 7 plus years of experience in environmental assessment, resource management, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of BC and federal environmental legislation including the Fisheries Act, Species at

Risk Act, and Impact Assessment Act.

  • Experience working with indigenous communities, and a strong understanding of indigenous

governance, rates, and knowledge systems.

  • Excellent project management skills, including budgeting and grant writing.
  • Proficiency in GIS and data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation strategies and habitat assessment and restoration
  • Ability to travel and work in remote settings and comfortable with variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity to operate field equipment, tools, and computer peripherals.
