Company Description

The THRiVE Discovery Lab (www.thrivedisovery.ca), Directed by Dr. Meghan Azad, is situated at the University of Manitoba and Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). Dr. Azad also Directs the Manitoba Interdisciplinary Lactation Centre (MILC). Our team studies how early-life experiences shape lifelong health, focusing on infant feeding practices, human milk compositionand the infant microbiome. We apply this research in various contexts and settings to understand the development and prevention of asthma, allergies, obesity, malnutrition and stunting. Our team is transdisciplinary, combining expertise in molecular biology, epidemiology, statistics, bioinformatics, nutrition, health equity and maternal-child health.

Role Description

We are seeking a Senior Bioinformatician / Data Manager to join our team. They will manage (30%) and analyze (70%) data for multiple projects, collaborate with internal and external partners, and help mentor junior lab members. Training and career development opportunities will be provided.

Role Type

  • Full time
  • Remote (within Canada), in person (in Winnipeg) or hybrid, depending on applicant's preference

Required Experience

  • MSc in bioinformatics, statistics, microbiology, biochemistry, data science or a related field
  • At least 4 years experience managing large-scale datasets and interpreting biological data (But note - if you have less experience but meet other criteria: we will be posting a junior analyst role soon! You are welcome to apply to the current posting to flag your interest.)
  • Studying omics data from human clinical populations
  • Programming for handling large datasets using database software
  • Writing scientific manuscripts
  • Detailed knowledge of advanced statistical data analysis, including mixed modelling, linear regression, multivariate models and related analyses.
  • Proficiency in R programming language with strong coding skills
  • Knowledge of epidemiology and statistics is required; familiarity with biological and/or microbiome data is preferred.

  • Strong communication skills in English (both written and oral), including presenting at scientific meetings
  • Conduct independent scientific research, interpret data, and publish results
  • Coherently articulate scientific principles related to bioinformatics, statistics, and other relevant fields
  • Work collaboratively in a team, including teaching, guiding and assisting other team members
  • Handle a variety of tasks, solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and shift priorities rapidly
  • Work independently and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines
  • Detail oriented with critical thinking, meticulous organization and record keeping skills
