Reporting to the Manager Process Engineering, the Senior Automation Engineer’s primary efforts are maintaining and improving Terra Nova’s FPSO distributed process control system.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering and Professional Engineering designation.

  • 12+ years work experience with distributed controls systems; with desired application in the petro-chemical/ oil and gas business (furthermore, experience in fixed and floating production systems, topsides facilities and offshore operations support would be considered a strong asset).

  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, alarm management, emergency shutdown systems, safety instrumented systems, subsea control systems, software maintenance and security.

  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge with the engineering tools required to monitor, operate and make software modifications to the various control systems (experience with ABB S+ Engineering and ABB 800xA configuration would be considered an asset).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of production system processes and economics.

  • Originality and ingenuity required for devising practical and economical solutions to problems.

  • Knowledge and experience in environmental, safety and loss prevention process and practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Project Management, and the ability to lead through influence.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of company policies and procedures, industry practices, instrumentation standards, rules and regulations, and Cybersecurity.

  • Planning, communication (presentation and technical writing), and continuous improvement mindset required to deliver overall value.

  • Computer fluent MS/Office and experience with SAP.

  • Ability to supervise a diverse team of individuals.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide technical support on control systems issues, provides guidance to Operations / Control and Safety Systems (CSS) maintenance personnel as required.

  • Support Terra Nova FPSO trip incident investigations.

  • Provide technical support and input to Sustaining Projects teams on control systems issues, including project design reviews, technical specifications, and equipment selection.

  • Support RQF development and regulatory queries/observations in cooperation with facilities engineers.

  • Responsible for the Terra Nova FPSO software change management process, including direction to the contracted EPF control system engineering team.

  • Maintain Terra Nova FPSO control system discipline documents and Cause & Effect diagrams.

  • Develop change requests, Software Change Notices (SCNs), lead and support Management of Change ensuring adherence to the Management of Change process.

  • Drive continuous improvement in performance and carry out commercial support e.g., contract adherence, vendor service requisitions, and invoice verification.

  • Develop and maintain reliability focused maintenance strategies for the control systems equipment.

  • Monitor and identify the risk of obsolete or aging control system equipment, recommending timely upgrades as required.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues.

  • Create and update material masters for controls system equipment, material and components for the Terra Nova FPSO.

  • Plan, organize and carry out complex and advanced technical studies on the Terra Nova FPSO control systems system.

  • Provides technical advice and mentoring to other engineers including students and contractors.

Location and Other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our St. John’s office, located at 130 Kelsey Drive.

  • Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines and the pay band will generally be based years of experience and scope of work.
