Description
Who We Are

Not just built for today. Building for tomorrow.

DIRTT is a global leader in industrialized construction. Our system of physical products and digital tools empowers organizations—alongside construction and design leaders—to build high-performing, adaptable interior environments.

Operating across workplace, healthcare, education, and public sector markets, DIRTT provides total design freedom and greater certainty in cost, schedule, and outcomes.

We are a highly motivated group of individuals who embrace the company’s entrepreneurial spirit. Everyone is hands-on, regardless of role. We celebrate our successes together, work hard, have fun, and treat one another with respect.

Who You Are

The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for architecting and executing the technical automation framework that drives operations from initial order submission through to manufacturing release. This role operates as the core technical executor of our automation strategy. Business case development, project prioritization, and external client communications are managed by internal Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), allowing this engineer to focus entirely on system architecture, technical design, and code execution.

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Automation Architecture: Design and maintain a resilient automation framework capable of bridging modern cloud ERPs (Dynamics Business Central), legacy financial systems (Sage), proprietary internal applications, and local fileshares.
  • Order-to-Manufacturing Execution: Develop automated workflows that process order intakes, validate structured Bill of Materials (BOM) data, apply deterministic rules for contextual part substitutions, and route finalized data to manufacturing.
  • AI-Driven Workflow Integration: Embed Artificial Intelligence models and agents into automation pipelines to handle unstructured data, drive dynamic decision-making, and manage complex logic where strict deterministic rules fall short.
  • CAD & Engineering Integration: Build programmatic integrations with AutoCAD to validate, update, and extract BOM data and engineering specifications without manual intervention.
  • Back-Office Process Automation: Architect secondary automation pipelines for administrative and financial workflows, specifically targeting Accounts Payable processing and Outlook-based communication triggers.
  • System Integration: Create reliable, secure data pipelines spanning Sage, Business Central, Insight, AutoCAD, Outlook, and proprietary internal systems using applicable APIs, direct database queries, or scripting methodologies.
  • Quality and Operations: Own automated tests, regression suites built from real data, CI /CD (Jenkins), infrastructure as code, monitoring and production support. Document the platform so it has a clear long-term owner.
  • Internal Collaboration: Partner directly with internal SMEs to capture process definitions, business rules, and edge-case logic, translating these requirements into production-ready automation scripts and workflows.
  • Additional duties may be assigned that are reasonably related to the role. Responsibilities may be adjusted or reprioritized in response to evolving business needs, technology, and organizational priorities, while maintaining alignment with the overall scope, purpose, and responsibilities of the position.
What's Required
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of overall technical experience in software engineering, backend architecture, or systems integration, including a minimum of 5 years specifically designing, building, and deploying enterprise automation frameworks.
  • AI in Automation: Minimum 1 year of hands-on experience incorporating Artificial Intelligence (LLMs or agentic frameworks) directly into automated workflows to inform decision-making, parse complex inputs, or handle contextual routing.
  • AI-Assisted Development: Demonstrated experience using Generative AI coding tools (such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar) to accelerate software development, write scripts, and debug code.
  • System Integration: Proven track record of integrating with ERP and financial systems, specifically Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Sage.
  • Engineering Automation: Demonstrated capability to automate engineering and design workflows, utilizing AutoCAD APIs or programmatic data extraction methods.
  • Scripting & Data Handling: High proficiency in relevant scripting languages (e.g., Python, C#) with strong capabilities in handling large structured datasets (e.g., comprehensive BOM CSV files) and local fileshare manipulation.
  • Legacy Systems: Experience building fault‑tolerant systems that interact with legacy or proprietary databases lacking modern API endpoints.
  • Cloud: Hands‑on experience designing and running event‑driven serverless systems on AWS (Lambda, SQS/EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, Step Functions, API Gateway), including infrastructure as code.
  • Testing Discipline: Unit and regression testing, comparison against known‑good results, and CI pipelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 7+ years of dedicated experience building enterprise automation frameworks.
  • 3+ years of experience integrating Artificial Intelligence into production automation workflows.
  • Direct background operating within configure‑to‑order or engineer‑to‑order manufacturing environments.
  • Experience programming deterministic logic to manage complex BOM validation and automated part substitution workflows.
  • Java or Kotlin, including integration with Java‑based applications.
  • Evaluating AI output: evals and acceptance‑rate tracking against human decisions.
  • Workflow engines or state machines (Step Functions, Temporal, Camunda) and event‑driven or event‑sourced designs.
  • Reading legacy Excel VBA, and Excel automation.
  • OutSystems, PTC Windchill or Microsoft Graph integrations.
What’s In It for You
  • A competitive base salary plus a variable pay (bonus) program.
  • Eligibility to participate in DIRTT’s Employee Share Purchase Plan.
  • Comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage (coverage and eligibility may vary by location).
  • For in‑office roles: continental breakfast, coffee, tea, soda, daily hot cafeteria lunch, and snacks to keep you energized.
  • Short‑term and long‑term disability coverage, plus life, critical illness, and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance.
  • Mental health support, including access to an Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).
  • A thorough and supportive onboarding program designed to set you up for success.
