Job summary

Scotiabank seeks a Senior Audit Manager, Compliance Audit to lead internal audit activities for Global Compliance Audit. You will oversee audits, develop risk-based approaches, and ensure findings are addressed with management. The role emphasizes data analytics, stakeholder collaboration, and adherence to IIA ethics.

You will supervise multiple audits, coordinate with regulators as needed, and contribute to continuous monitoring and program development within a high-performing team.

Qualifications

  • University/post secondary degree in Business or equivalent; relevant audit or business certifications.
  • At least 5+ years of relevant experience in Compliance or related fields, including internal audit, internal controls, regulatory experience, and data analytics.
  • Expert knowledge and experience in swap dealer compliance.
  • Working knowledge of the operations and regulatory environments for each unit as applicable.
  • Proven ability to operate in high ambiguity and rapidly changing environments.
  • Proficiency in applying Scotiabank methodology with risk-based auditing standards.
  • Strong analytics and data visualization skills using Co-Pilot, Alteryx, Power BI, Tableau, Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Strong people management and coaching/development abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead internal audit activities for Global Compliance Audit.
  • Collaborate with other audit teams as needed.
  • Plan, execute, and report on audits and projects.
  • Oversee execution, planning, and reporting as OIC/AP.
  • Identify root causes and ensure timely management action on findings.
  • Foster client-focused culture and leverage bank relationships.
  • Stay updated on risk appetite, culture, and regulatory changes.
  • Document project approach and secure agreement prior to start.
  • Maintain Scotiabank ethics and IIA Code of Ethics in all work.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and regulators as required.
  • Share information impacting other audit areas promptly.
  • Support continuous monitoring and data analytics initiatives.
  • Contribute to CoE program rollout for consistent audits.
  • Assist in scalable data analytics for annual planning and risk assessment.
  • Represent the Audit function across Compliance committees.

As the 3rd Line of Defence, Internal Audit provides enterprise-wide, independent, and objective assurance over the design and operations of the Bank’s internal controls, risk management and governance processes. The Senior Audit Manager assists in leading internal audit activities for Global Compliance Audit in support of the Audit Department in executing on its global mandate, ensuring business strategies, plans and initiatives and all audit activities are conducted / executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

  • Acts primarily as Officer in Charge (OIC) as a team member for assigned audits. May act as Audit Principal (AP) for low to medium complexity audits.
  • Works with other audit teams as required.
  • Carries out specific projects.
  • As OIC/AP, oversees the execution, planning, and reporting. Obtains a thorough understanding of the end-to-end business/unit/process and associated risks, develops an appropriate risk-based audit approach and schedules timing and resources.
  • Ensures audit results are gathered and determines the root cause of the problem. Prepares and/or reviews audit results and findings for presentation to management. Follows-up for corrective action/progress against any reported issues. Ensures relevant information that impacts other audit function areas is shared.
  • Supports a client focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Plans, documents, and seeks agreement in advance to the project approach and confirms conclusions upon completion in writing.
  • Ensures Scotiabank standards and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Code of Ethics are maintained in completion of all assignments.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and regulators as required.
  • Interacts and coordinates with other groups involved. Completes timely review of workpapers, ensuring internal control weaknesses are clearly documented with recommendations addressing the root cause and are communicated timely to management.
  • Supports ongoing monitoring activities to stay abreast of changes (business/industry/regulatory), emerging risks, and themes or systemic issues that may impact the risk assessment of the audit universe and the audit plan.
  • Supports a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.
  • Meets Department training requirements.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of compliance risks and processes, including staying abreast of key industry and regulatory changes. Identify key systemic issues (arising from audits globally) and internal changes that will impact the annual audit plan and/or quarterly Audit Committee reporting.
  • Support the continued development of the CoE Program through the roll-out of a global audit program that ensures a consistent approach to audits and validation activities of regulatory compliance risk.
  • Assist in developing tactical strategies for increasing the use of data analytics to drive effective annual planning/risk assessment, continuous monitoring, and engagement/project execution.
  • Support the Director in representing the Audit across Compliance related committees.

  • Strong analytical capabilities with demonstrated proficiency in data analytics and visualization tools (e.g., Co-Pilot, Alteryx, Power BI, Tableau, Excel, etc.). Ability to use these tools to identify risks, trends, and control gaps, and to integrate data-driven insights into audit planning and execution.
  • Ability to execute and supervise multiple projects at any given time.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong people management and coaching/development skills.
