What You’ll Be Doing

CIBC's Enterprise Strategy and Corporate Development (ES&CD) team plays a key role in developing and implementing CIBC's enterprise strategy, the strategies for CIBC's business units and other strategic initiatives. The team collaborates with senior leaders to develop actionable strategies, execute strategic initiatives and transactions (e.g., organic growth initiatives, acquisitions, divestitures, partnerships and investments) to increase the value of CIBC’s businesses and position CIBC for sustained success.

In this role you will report to the VP, Corporate Development, and play a key role in identifying, assessing and executing CIBC’s strategic transactions (e.g., acquisitions, divestitures and partnerships), private equity and venture capital fund investments and other initiatives. You will be a key member of deal teams, working with the bank’s lines of business and infrastructure groups, developing and conducting due diligence and financial analysis on transactions. You will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, financial modelling and impact analysis, research, presentation preparation and deal management support, play a key role in CIBC’s portfolio of principal investments (PE/VC funds and direct) and may be asked to asked to assist with other ES&CD projects.

The role is varied and often involves periods of very intense activity given tight deadlines and time pressures. It requires dedication, a passion for excellence, and an exceptional work ethic.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Transaction Execution – Support members of the ES&CD team in the development and execution of CIBC’s strategy as it relates to acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and investments. Complete strategic and financial analysis to assess the attractiveness of potential M&A transactions and investments. Prepare presentations for internal clients that include CIBC’s Executive Committee and its Board of Directors.
  • Financial Modelling, Valuation, and Analysis - Prepare financial models, in-depth valuation, and other financial analysis to assess the feasibility of potential strategic opportunities and transactions, which may include discounted cash flow, comparable company and precedent transaction analysis.
  • Research, Due Diligence and Deal Management – Perform research to identify and evaluate potential opportunities and ensure ES&CD has robust competitive intelligence and strong awareness of trends, industry developments, and regulatory changes. Assist with managing the due diligence process and project management on transactions.
  • Investment Portfolio Management - Support the ongoing development and execution of various reporting of investments to key internal stakeholders on a quarterly, annual and ad-hoc basis. Prepare materials and perform analysis to drive insights and inform decisions for delivery to senior leaders. Monitor the performance of CIBC’s portfolio of principal investments (PE/VC funds and direct).

Who You Are

  • You have a degree in a finance related field (MBA and/or undergraduate degree in business, finance or accounting; professional designations, e.g. CPA, CFA are preferred).
  • You can demonstrate experience in investment banking, corporate development and/or corporate finance. You have excellent analytical abilities including knowledge of valuation techniques and practices and can develop sophisticated financial models. Excellent team/relationship building, communication, and strong organization skills are preferred, coupled with strategic thinking/analytical capabilities. 2 years or more of relevant experience is preferred, but not required. You have a high proficiency using Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint) to perform analysis, drive insights, and inform decisions .It’s an asset if you have knowledge of the financial services industry sectors and/or transaction experience in private equity or venture capital funds.
