We are looking on behalf of our client for a Senior Aquarist.

Location : Vancouver, BC

We are seeking a dedicated Senior Aquarist to lead daily operations related to aquatic life care, aquarium maintenance, customer education, and team supervision. This role ensures the health of livestock, excellence in customer service, and smooth functioning of store activities while supporting the development of junior team members.

Aquatic Life Care & Tank Maintenance
  • Monitor health and well-being of fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants.
  • Perform daily husbandry tasks including water testing, dosing, feeding, and tank cleaning.
  • Conduct water changes, filter maintenance, and algae control.
  • Identify and report signs of disease and administer treatments when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal health and aquarium conditions.
  • Adhere to biosecurity protocols during livestock handling.
Customer Service & Education
  • Greet customers and create a welcoming, professional atmosphere.
  • Provide expert guidance on livestock care, aquascaping, tank setup, and product use.
  • Assist in selecting fish and plants, troubleshooting issues, and bagging livestock.
  • Promote sustainable aquarium practices and brand-partner products.
  • Build long-term relationships to support customer loyalty and hobby growth.
Inventory & Store Operations
  • Receive and acclimate livestock shipments with care and efficiency.
  • Track inventory levels for livestock, dry goods, and plants.
  • Refill sumps and perform regular mineral dosing.
  • Organize, stock, and maintain an attractive and hygienic retail environment.
  • Complete accurate sales transactions and answer customer inquiries by phone.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
  • Supervise and support 2 Junior Aquarists.
  • Train new hires and share best practices.
  • Act as a self-starter—anticipate store needs and suggest improvements.
  • Collaborate with the Store Manager on operational and organizational goals.
  • Participate in larger maintenance projects and day-to-day task execution.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years\' experience in freshwater aquarium care (nano fish and aquascaped tanks preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of water chemistry, filtration systems, and aquatic plant care.
  • Prior experience in a retail aquarium store or public aquarium setting is a strong asset.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to educate and explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
  • High school diploma required; post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and remain on feet for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working around water, fish tanks, and occasional visiting pets.
  • Availability for 10-hour shifts, including weekends and some evenings.
  • Exposure to wet and slippery conditions, ladders, and uneven surfaces.
