Job summary

Bloomberg’s Engineering AI team in Toronto seeks a Senior Applied AI Engineer to build AI-driven search, discovery, and workflow features. You will work across ML and software engineers to bring innovative AI solutions to customer‑facing products, bridging research and production.

You will design, train, and evaluate ML models and agentic systems, publish findings, and participate in open‑source and academic venues. Strong Python and production‑scale experience are essential.

Qualifications

• Ph.D./Master’s/Bachelor’s with significant AI/ML research or industry experience.
• Hands‑on ML/DL and generative AI techniques applied to real-world problems.
• Strong software engineering skills with Python and scalable systems.
• Experience building LLM-powered apps and retrieval augmented generation.
• Experience with agentic AI systems using tools, APIs, and databases.
• Publications at AI/ML/NLP venues are a plus.

Bloomberg’s Engineering AI department has 450+ AI practitioners building highly sought after products and features that often require novel innovations. We are investing in AI to build better search, discovery, and workflow solutions using technologies such as transformers, gradient boosted decision trees, large language models, and dense vector databases. We are expanding our group and seeking highly skilled individuals who will be responsible for contributing to the team (or teams) of Machine Learning (ML) and Software Engineers that are bringing innovative solutions to AI-driven customer-facing products.

In Toronto, our Applied AI Engineers are central to Bloomberg's work on financial query understanding, code generation and agentic systems over structured data. They bridge the gap between pioneering research and production, building models and agents that answer complex financial questions, write and execute code, and bring new datasets into the platforms our clients query every day. They engineer state-of-the-art code generation and agent systems, build the evaluation loops that tell us whether those systems are right, and apply LLM techniques like CoT, SFT or RLHF to drive iterative model refinement.

We are looking for Senior Applied AI Engineers with the following experience:

• Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI/ML, NLP or relevant technical field with 0–2 years of experience, or a Master’s with 4+ years, or a Bachelor’s with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Practical experience applying machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI techniques to real-world problems, from experimentation through production deployment.
• Strong software engineering skills, including proficiency in Python and experience designing, testing, and maintaining scalable production systems.
• Hands‑on experience building LLM-powered applications, including retrieval‑augmented generation, prompt engineering, model evaluation, or post‑training techniques.
• Experience developing agentic AI systems that use external tools, APIs, search systems, databases, or code execution environments.
• Experience building agentic harnesses or orchestration frameworks, including tool routing, state and memory management, multi‑step workflows, guardrails, tracing, retries, and evaluation.
• Strong computer science fundamentals, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across technical and non‑technical teams; publications at leading AI, ML, or NLP conferences are a plus.
