Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for the Duo Chat team to build core AI features behind GitLab Duo Chat. You will work on flow components, agentic flows, and integration with LangGraph within the Duo Workflow Service, interfacing with the Rails monolith.

You’ll own backend features end-to-end, integrate generative AI models, and design scalable APIs while ensuring performance and reliability at scale. Remote-global team collaboration is emphasized.

Qualifications

• Production Python backend experience with APIs and data models.
• Experience with AI-powered backend features including LLM integration.
• Willingness to learn Ruby on Rails or strong familiarity.

Responsibilities

• Design and build flow components and agentic flows in Flow Registry using Python and LangGraph for Duo Chat.
• Develop, ship, and maintain backend features for GitLab Duo Chat across Python Duo Workflow Service and Rails monolith.
• Integrate AI models, tools, and multi-agent orchestration patterns to expand Duo Chat capabilities.
• Design and review REST/GraphQL APIs with clear contracts for frontend and host systems.
• Improve debugging, observability, and test coverage with pytest and RSpec at scale.
• Collaborate with Product/UX/AI teams to deliver high-quality improvements.
• Document standards and patterns for safe AI integration.
• Participate in Tier 2 on-call rotations for production reliability.
