The role
As the Senior Advisor, Indigenous engagement at Alto, you will play a key role in implementing the company’s Indigenous Engagement Strategy. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations, ensuring meaningful consultation and participation throughout the project. This role involves effective coordination, partnership management, and promoting socio-economic opportunities for Indigenous communities.
The Responsibilities
Indigenous Community Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities and leadership by actively listening to their needs, concerns, and aspirations.
- Serve as a central point for coordinating relationships and partnerships between Alto and Indigenous communities, organizations, and businesses.
- Continuously monitor, analyze, and evaluate the strength of relationships with Indigenous communities and propose strategies for continuous improvement.
Collaboration Agreement Development
- Lead the development of Collaboration Agreements with Indigenous communities by deploying a proactive and innovative approach to building community capacity.
- Ensure that these agreements enable meaningful participation in the planning and co-development phases of the project, while promoting tangible benefits and increased capacity for Indigenous communities, particularly in employment and business sectors.
Identifying Socio-Economic Opportunities
- Identify business, employment, and partnership opportunities to support Alto’s strategic objectives.
- Collaborate closely with Indigenous communities to advance these opportunities while fostering reconciliation and supporting long-term socio-economic development initiatives.
Internal and External Collaboration
- Work closely with internal stakeholders (e.g., private development partners, other departments) to implement strategies that strengthen Indigenous engagement and community consultation.
- Prepare and lead presentations to Alto’s Senior Executives on Indigenous relations matters related to the project and progress achieved.
Managing Sensitive Issues
- Working knowledge of the principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession and understanding of Indigenous data sovereignty.
- Take responsibility for managing complex and sensitive Indigenous relations issues with discretion, judgment, and diplomacy.
- Develop strategic options to address concerns from communities, balancing project objectives with Indigenous perspectives.
Best Practices and Strategy Development
- Engage with local, regional, and national Indigenous leaders to exchange best practices and enhance Alto's approach to community consultation and engagement.
- Contribute to the development of new initiatives that meet the needs of Indigenous communities and supports capacity building and reconciliation.
Preparation of Confidential Documents
- Prepare sensitive documents (briefs, option papers, presentations) for internal and external audiences, ensuring confidentiality of shared information.
The Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, social sciences or a relevant field.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in Indigenous relations or a related field.
- Ability to establish and maintain trust-based relationships with various stakeholders.
- Ability to analyze relationships and propose solutions to address emerging challenges.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with the utmost respect for confidentiality.
- Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external partners, including Indigenous communities and organizations.
- Experience managing and negotiating complex and potentially contentious issues, with strong judgment and discretion.
- Availability to travel within Quebec and Ontario, as required by the project.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous governance structures and the priorities of Indigenous communities in the Quebec and Ontario regions is an asset.
- Proficiency in either English or French is required. Proficiency in both official languages is an asset.
- Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
