EPCOR Water Services (EWS) is excited to offer a permanent, full-time opportunity for a n Environment Senior Advisor to join our dedicated System Operations team at the Aurum site in Edmonton, AB. This is a great opportunity to contribute to meaningful environmental work in a collaborative and supportive team environment.

As a Environment Senior Advisor, you’ll play a key role in protecting our environment while supporting critical operations across EPCOR Water Services. In this dynamic position, you’ll provide expert guidance on operational planning and project support, lead incident investigations, conduct environmental assessments, and recommend effective mitigation strategies. You’ll also manage regulatory permit applications and offer compliance support for emerging environmental issues.

In addition, you’ll contribute to the ongoing success of our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, helping to ensure our practices align with environmental standards and achieve long-term sustainability goals. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, with responsibilities that span up to two years in scope—perfect for someone who thrives on both immediate action and strategic planning.

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Monitoring , Compliance and Support, your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing environmental management support across EPCOR Water Services (EWS), including building and maintaining strong working relationships with stakeholders in Operations, Planning, Construction Services, and Project Management.
  • Collaborating with a broad employee base to manage complex environmental risks associated with business unit activities.
  • Managing environmental and public health incidents, including validating incident classifications and risk rankings, ensuring complete and accurate documentation, reviewing regulatory follow-up communications, compiling monthly reports, coordinating incident reviews, and supporting audits.
  • Leading or participating in environmental incident investigations, which may involve conducting confidential interviews with union, non-union, and management staff, gathering and documenting evidence, preparing summary reports, and presenting findings to leadership.
  • Monitoring and communicating changes in environmental regulations, industry best practices, and EPCOR’s performance to support continuous improvement. Recommending and implementing updates to environmental policies, procedures, and systems as needed.
  • Providing regulatory guidance and support to project teams, including preparing and submitting permit applications and ensuring compliance with environmental obligations throughout project lifecycles.
  • Supporting capital and operational projects by reviewing or developing environmental documentation such as Erosion and Sedimentation Control Plans, environmental protection plans , Environmental Monitoring Programs, and completing site audits.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in developing environmental procedures, monitoring, and measurement, and offering feedback and guidance during all phases of project delivery—from pre-construction through post-construction.
  • Prioritizing stakeholder engagement and value-added support across internal teams, external partners, and customers.
  • Engaging with external regulatory bodies (e.g., Alberta Environment, City of Edmonton, Environment Canada) in alignment with Public & Government Affairs protocols to build strong relationships and meet regulatory requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate and organized electronic records using EPCOR’s SharePoint system.
  • Overseeing contractor management for environmental projects—both operational and capital—including performance evaluation, accounting functions, selection criteria development, field inspections, deliverable reviews, and other project management tasks.

What’s required to be successful

Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:

  • Completion of Degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Management ( or related) from a recognized post-secondary educational institute.
    • B.Sc.. B.A. Sc. or equivalent
    • Membership (or eligible for membership) with a regulated professional body ( such as, P.Ag., R.T.Ag., P.Bio . , etc. ).

Required Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in environmental work, with a focus on:
    • Biophysical assessments and surveys (e.g., E nvironmental I mpact A ssessment , E nvironmental S ite A ssessment, etc. )
    • Environmental construction monitoring
    • Environmental planning and project execution
  • Soil and water sampling
  • Regulatory experience, including:
    • Environmental planning, permitting, and regulatory notifications at municipal, provincial, and federal levels
    • Preparing environmental assessment and impact reports
    • Submitting Code of Practice notifications
  • Wastewater knowledge:
    • Understanding of water distribution and transmission and wastewater collection system operations
    • Familiarity with discharge regulations, monitoring techniques, and compliance guidelines in Canadian jurisdictions
  • Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations, including:
    • Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act
    • Alberta Environmental Site Assessment Standard
    • Alberta land conservation, reclamation and remediation guidelines
    • Waste Control Regulation
    • City of Edmonton River Valley , Public Tree and Parkland Bylaws
  • Environmental construction monitoring:
    • Best practices in tree protection, erosion and sediment control, water management, waste management, and soil handling
  • Understanding of environmental releases, field monitoring, data interpretation, and impact assessments
  • Adaptability and organization:
    • Proven ability to manage shifting priorities and work effectively in dynamic environments
    • Strong time management and organizational skills
    • Resilience and leadership in times of change
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License.
    • Ability to qualify for and maintain an EPCOR driver's permit
    • A Driver Abstract (5yr. Commercial type) may be required
    • Limited to 6 demerits or less at date of hire (prior infractions for unsafe driving behaviours will be evaluated and considered for non-selection regardless of current demerits on file).

Additional Assets:

The following qualifications are considered strong assets for the successful candidate:

  • Previous experience in construction environments
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Experience in project management and change management initiatives

This is a professional level position that typically works Monday to Friday (40 hours per week) .

The s uccessful candidate must provide their own vehicles with appropriate insurance in accordance with EPCOR’s Employee Mileage Reimbursement Policy. You will be reimbursed in accordance with EPCOR’s Employee Mileage Reimbursement Policy.

  • A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age, successfully attained a high school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education) and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
  • If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and/or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment, which is dictated by law. These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment.
