Job summary

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company is seeking an experienced actuary to lead high-quality valuation analyses and the financial and regulatory reporting of actuarial reserves. You will derive insights, automate reporting, and advance reserving techniques while mentoring analysts.

Open to Senior Actuarial Analyst, Actuarial Consultant, or Senior Actuarial Consultant levels; role participates in cross-functional projects and external engagements as needed.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related discipline.
  • More than four years of actuarial experience an asset; Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society or equivalent.
  • Advanced knowledge of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, and finance.
  • Ability to develop efficient solutions and assess impacts of these solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency with SQL and R, and/or other languages; Excel and Power BI.

Responsibilities

  • Extracts and manipulates complex data from relevant sources; assesses data quality.
  • Supports the business by performing analyses and ad-hoc requests with minimal support.
  • Evaluates processes for efficiency and avenues for automation and improvement.
  • Represent Wawanesa at external events (universities, actuarial clubs, industry orgs).
  • Mentors actuarial analysts; drives cross-functional knowledge and skills.

Work Environment: We offer a hybrid work environment that offers flexibility to our employees in balancing in-office (2 days per week OR 15 hours per week in a Wawanesa office) and remote work. Working Business Language: English. This role is considered a head-office role and will be required to communicate with internal stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language utilized is English.

JOB OVERVIEW

As a member of our Reserving function, you will lead the completion of high-quality valuation analysis, as well the financial and regulatory reporting of our actuarial reserves. Your focus will be on deriving insights from this analysis and communicating these to our key stakeholders. In addition, you will prioritize improving the sophistication of our actuarial financial reporting through process enhancements, automation, data manipulation, reporting capabilities, and advancement of our reserving techniques. Providing contributions to the actuarial group based on your knowledge from the actuarial exam system, as well as your prior relevant academic and work experience is expected. You will be a mentor and coach for actuarial analysts while working through complex analysis in the pursuit of solving business problems and answering business questions.

Note: We are open to hiring at the Senior Actuarial Analyst, Actuarial Consultant or Senior Actuarial Consultant level.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality.
  • Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with minimal support from peers and leaders. Evaluates procedures and processes, and recommend alternatives or improvements.
  • Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency. Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks and implements advanced techniques. Develops new approaches to problem solving and assesses impacts of solution options with minimal support from leaders.
  • Encouraged to represent Wawanesa at external events that may include universities, actuarial clubs, industry organizations, and charitable causes.
  • Commits to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies.
  • Provides regular project updates to stakeholders. Anticipates obstacles and raises them in advance.
  • Leads projects from beginning to end. Includes implementation of final product.
  • May include training and documentation of the project.
  • Actively contributes to the mentorship, training and development of actuarial analysts.
  • Provides feedback, instruction, and development guidance to help others excel in their current or future job responsibilities.
  • Builds trust and credibility with peers. Develops strong working relationships across teams.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced proficiency with SQL and R, and/or other related programming languages. Advanced proficiency in Excel and Power BI and/or equivalent.
  • Advanced proficiency in reserving software such as Arius. Ability to easily adapt to new enterprise system environments.
  • Effective communicator with proven presentation skills.
  • Works well in a team setting, contributes to team spirit and shared objectives. Adept at supporting and mentoring colleagues.
  • Works openly and transparently in collaboration with business partners.
