Job summary

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company is seeking an Actuarial Expert to drive pricing plans, advanced analytics, and profitability initiatives in the Alberta Auto segment. You will influence product design and work with analytics, claims and business development to deliver insights.

This head-office role requires FCAS, 10+ years of actuarial experience, and a proven ability to communicate with stakeholders across Canada.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related discipline.
  • FCAS designation required.
  • 10+ years actuarial experience is an asset.
  • Advanced communicator and storyteller.
  • Proficient with Excel, SQL, R, Python; able to present data clearly.
  • Ability to lead complex projects and mentor analysts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale, high-impact actuarial projects across teams.

Work Environment: We offer a hybrid work environment that offers flexibility to our employees in balancing in‑office (2 days per week OR 15 hours per week in a Wawanesa office) and remote work. Working Business Language: English. This role is considered a head‑office role and will be required to communicate with internal stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language utilized is English.

Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $135,000 - $170,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

The Actuarial Expert leverages strong technical actuarial skills and business acumen to drive critical growth and profitability projects in Wawanesa’s critical Alberta Auto product segment. This includes delivering increasingly sophisticated pricing plans, advanced analytics, and insights. We are looking for someone who will drive strong business recommendations, working closely with partner functions from product design and business development to advanced analytics and claims.

  • Creates coaching opportunities with analysts and managers to improve their technical abilities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related discipline.
  • More than ten years of actuarial experience an asset.
  • FCAS designation required
  • Advanced communicator. People trust the communications of an expert.
  • Leaves behind useful and functional documentation on projects.
  • Strong negotiator and storyteller. Uses graphs and data in a way that supplements their arguments.
  • Persuasive with the conclusions from their work. Often presents their work to Director + level.
  • Fully proficient with Excel, SQL, R, Python, or other specialized programs.
  • Leverages the right program(s) for the job
  • Excellent problem solver. Integrates knowledge from actuarial science, math, statistics, general business to solve advanced problems. Often working on the highest‑priority problems for Wawanesa. May offer recommendations for what are the highest‑priority problems for Wawanesa to solve.
