Senior Accountant (Relocate to Smithers, BC!)

Join Witset First Nation as a Senior Accountant in Smithers, BC.

Position Overview:

Witset First Nation is seeking a full-time Senior Accountant to manage core financial functions including payroll, budgeting, fund accounting, and reporting in accordance with PSAB standards. Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will oversee financial operations, prepare financial statements, support audits, and contribute to financial system improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage accounting records, review coding, post invoices, and reconcile bank statements.
  2. Oversee accounts payable, receivable, and payroll processing.
  3. Mentor and support AP and Payroll staff.
  4. Prepare financial statements and reports aligned with PSAB and fund accounting standards.
  5. Collaborate with departments to ensure financial compliance.
  6. Support grant applications and funding compliance.
  7. Participate in year-end audits and maintain internal controls.
  8. Assist in budget preparation and variance analysis.
  9. Improve financial systems and reporting processes.
  10. Provide financial training and guidance to staff.
  11. Ensure accurate record-keeping and compliance with funding agreements.
  12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, with at least 3 years of experience, preferably in municipal, First Nations, or public sector environments. Proficiency in Sage 300 and Excel, understanding of PSAB standards, fund accounting, and municipal finance is required. Experience with budget development, grant management, and regulatory reporting is preferred. Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills are essential.
