ABOUT US:

Macdonald Development Corporation, established in Vancouver in 1985, is a real estate developer. Its division, Macdonald Communities Limited (MCL), oversees all Canadian development in British Columbia and Alberta. The name Macdonald Communities reflects a dedication to developing exceptional communities where individuals can establish their lives and families. Recognizing that people define a home and neighborhood, our aim is to create environments that foster community and personal growth.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

  • Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 based on experience
  • Hybrid Schedule: 3 days onsite, 2 days remote
  • Vacation: 3 weeks to start
  • Benefits: Comprehensive package
  • Transit-Friendly Location: Downtown office + discounted parking
  • Learning & Growth: Exposure to development, corporate, and property accounting
  • Team Culture: Respectful, collaborative, and forward-thinking

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of real estate development projects and income-producing properties. This includes project accounting, corporate reporting, and property management financials. You will work closely with project managers, property managers, and consultants to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting. This role also supports financial planning and analysis activities and contributes to process improvement. This is a mid-senior level role that requires strong technical accounting skills, project-focused experience, and the ability to independently manage competing priorities across multiple entities.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage full-cycle accounting records for active real estate development projects in British Columbia and Alberta using accounting software programs.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and working papers for each project entity in accordance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
  • Track filing deadlines for multiple entities and ensure compliance with corporate tax requirements across jurisdictions.
  • Manage accounting for multiple holding companies and investment entities; reconcile intercompany loans, dividends, and capital contributions.
  • Assist in the preparation of corporate budgets, forecasts, and financial models; analyze actual performance against plans.
  • Review commercial leases and rent schedules to ensure accurate lease setup, rent calculations, and recoveries.
  • Use Power Query or similar tools to consolidate and analyze financial data from multiple sources.
  • Contribute to the development of dashboards and visuals that support decision-making across departments.
  • Continuously assess existing processes to identify opportunities for improvement, and recommend practical, scalable solutions that enhance efficiency and support long-term growth.

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience in public accounting or private enterprise accounting, with a strong emphasis on year-end file preparation and financial reporting.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or in final stages of completion.
  • To reduce barriers, a combination of transferable skills, knowledge, lived experience, and comparable qualifications will be considered.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASPE and full-cycle accounting practices.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including formula auditing and experience with Power BI and Power Query is an asset.

ABOUT YOU:

  • Detail-Oriented: Maintains a high standard of accuracy and completeness in all financial records and reports.
  • Analytical Thinker: Uses data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities; sees connections between detailed transactions and overall financial results.
  • Strong Communicator: Able to explain complex financial matters clearly and professionally to both financial and non-financial colleagues.
  • Takes Initiative and Problem Solves: Takes ownership of problems and follows through on solutions without being told what to do.
