Position Overview
This role will primarily be responsible for managing and processing accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, maintaining fiscal records, preparing monthly bank reconciliations, and preparing financial reports including Income Statement (Statement of Activities) and Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position). This position plays a key role in the financial operations of Witset First Nation, ensuring compliance with Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards and fund accounting principles. The Senior Accountant will supervise, review, and work closely with the Accounts Payable Clerk and Payroll Clerk, department managers, and report to the Finance Manager. The ideal candidate will be a forward thinker, dynamic, adaptable to a fast-paced environment, embracing change, and a problem solver.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Management & Reporting: Manage books of account, review coding and posting invoices, deposits, bank reconciliations, and ensure timely and accurate processing of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
- Provide mentorship and cross-training for AP Clerk and Payroll Clerk.
- Maintain an up-to-date, complete, and digitized filing system for financial records.
- Assist in preparing monthly/quarterly financial statements in accordance with PSAB and fund accounting principles for review and distribution to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with department managers on bookkeeping needs and ensure adherence to finance policies.
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing in compliance with employment standards and taxation laws.
- Support compliance with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), funding agencies, and other regulatory bodies.
- Oversee grant and funding applications, ensuring proper reporting.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and assist with annual audits and year-end procedures.
- Develop and maintain internal controls to prevent fraud and safeguard assets.
- Provide forensic bookkeeping services as needed.
- Exercise care over assets and records, establishing safeguarding procedures.
Budgeting & Planning
- Support department managers in developing annual budgets aligned with strategic goals.
- Monitor cash flow, expenditures, and funding allocations, providing updates to the Finance Manager.
- Oversee budget preparation and variance analysis for programs and projects.
Financial Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain and improve financial software and accounting systems.
- Identify and implement process improvements for reporting, budgeting, and controls.
- Train staff on financial policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Training, Education, Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
