Senior Accountant

Internal Reporting | Financial Reliability | Workflow Efficiency

*DigitalEd is a fully remote organization, headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada with employees working remotely throughout the UK, USA, Australia, Philippines, and Brazil. This specific position is open to candidates who reside in Ontario.

DigitalEd has a simple and resonant purpose — to shape the world through digital learning. As a SaaS company in the online learning market for higher education, our Möbius platform is a comprehensive solution designed for the unique needs of teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It’s a product that’s genuinely impacting the way students learn STEM, and with that kind of footprint in the world, imagine the team we’re building behind the scenes. To support our growth, we're searching for a Senior Accountant.

A Senior Accountant at DigitalEd owns the day-to-day accounting function of the business to ensure accuracy and consistency in the financial data. Managing the accounting functions, and reporting to the VP of Finance & Operations, the Senior Accountant will ensure the right processes are being followed to produce accurate and timely reporting. This includes internal reporting, regulatory compliance reporting, as well as working with our external audit partner to complete working papers to support annual financial statements and tax returns. As a critical presence on our Finance team, being successful in this role means steadily focusing on the integrity of our data and reporting, leading with curiosity and inquiry, and reinforcing checks and balances to uphold healthy financial operations. You will leverage your experience to make suggestions for improvement and are confident speaking about the details in your work.

Outcomes & Key Responsibilities: What's Expected of You

  • Preparing monthly financial reconciliations and reporting process for each entity (3), as well as consolidation to produce corporate level reporting
  • Preparation of year-end working papers and coordination of audit/review engagement leading to preparation of formal annual financial statements
  • Ensuring tax compliance at all levels (International, Federal, Provincial), including income taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, and any other applicable taxes and preparing tax summaries and supporting working papers
  • Following appropriate internal financial controls, ensuring best practices are in place by making suggestions for improvement
  • Prepare reporting that demonstrates compliance with budgets and forecasts for the business and assist with the preparation of budgets and forecasts in collaboration with the VP, Finance & Operations
  • Preparation of International payroll using various payroll platforms for a team of 40

Measures of Performance: How You Know You’re Doing Well

  • You fully own and continuously improve DE’s financial reporting process, with clear gains in timeliness and accuracy
  • Month-end close deadlines are consistently met or exceeded
  • Your records are audit-ready, well-documented and easy to understand
  • DE remains fully compliant with all regulatory reporting and filing obligations
  • You proactively catch and correct errors or inconsistencies before others flag them
  • You clearly communicate with the team and your manager of progress, delays or issues
  • You maintain and regularly update a reliable forecast model to support monthly and quarterly planning and assist with decision making
  • You successfully lead the accounting function and ensure reporting is positioned to support the company’s continued growth.

Competencies & Experience: The 'Stuff' that Makes You Great at This

  • Experience with the financial reporting demands of an Investor-led, growth-phase SaaS-based business
  • Holds a Canadian CPA Designation or equivalent experience
  • A well-rounded team player: strong analytical skills, high care for attention to detail, refined interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-starter who can achieve deliverables in a remote environment with limited direct supervision
  • Curiosity and inquisitiveness to understand the operations of the business underlying the financial reporting
  • Ability to identify existing processes or systems that are not working effectively or meeting the needs of the business and identify and implement upgraded processes or systems to improve effectiveness and efficiency
  • Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment as the company grows, staying one step ahead in terms of implementing appropriate systems and processes to support the evolving needs of the business
  • Experience with Quickbooks, Ceridian (Payforce), Global PEO/Payroll systems; and exposure to Hubspot would be an asset.

Lastly, being successful is personal. Everyone defines it differently and that’s a-ok. However you define success is up to you, but know that the spirit of DigitalEd’s culture is ‘No Deposit, No Return’. It’s our job in Finance to come up with solutions to support a growing and evolving business, while also maintaining compliance with the regulatory frameworks that “define the box.”

This role is ideal for a driven and detail-oriented accounting professional looking to deepen their expertise in a growing SaaS business. The Senior Accountant will gain exposure to high-impact financial reporting, compliance, and process improvement initiatives — with a clear pathway to take on more strategic responsibilities over time. For the right candidate, this role has the potential to evolve into a Financial Controller position. We’re looking for an accounting professional who’s ready to use their skillset to paint a masterpiece without running off the page, so if you’re up for being an integral part of a great team, we’d love to talk. Our projected budget for this role is in the range of $70,000-$85,000 CDN per year.

The expected ramp-up time to full proficiency in this role is 3 months, so it’s incumbent on us to provide a strong onboarding and it’s incumbent on you to show up with a desire to learn and make an impact. Here’s the plan for your first few months at DigitalEd:
