Position Description

The Senior Accountant reports to the Canadian Controller. The position actively participates in the planning, directing and coordination of all accounting operational functions of the company.

We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant with a strong background in SAP ERP systems, the ideal candidate will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing monthly and annual reports, supporting audits, and improving financial processes using SAP. This position requires a deep understanding of Canadian accounting and tax standards, and internal controls.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage / support month-end and year-end close process
  • Prepare and review journal and General Ledger entries, and monthly financial reports.
  • Analyze revenue, margin and expenses for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare and review monthly general ledger account reconciliations and analysis for all balance sheet accounts ensuring proper working paper support / backup
  • Ensure accuracy of financial data within SAP and identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement using SAP
  • Participate in the creation and review of forecasts / budget / variance analysis, and revisions in compliance with group requirements for both content and timing
  • Manage, Prepare and review fixed asset accounting, accruals, prepayments, and intercompany transactions
  • Deliver accurate and timely operating statements, management reports and account reconciliations on a scheduled basis
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with internal controls and work with the team to automate, where possible to make the close process more efficient
  • Complete monthly variance analysis, including identifying, investigating and reviewing transactions and / or amounts to support conclusions. Note opportunities to improve processes to further streamline operations
  • Prepare inventory Reports, review and rectify inventory issues in subsidiary ledger and calculate inventory provision as per policy
  • Lead the creation of the annual audit working papers – provide support for year-end audit requests
  • Support the efforts to maintain customer accounts and amounts within agreed terms – review status of all accounts, support reconciliation and collection efforts in conjunction with the sales and customer care teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a small team to ensure efficiency and accuracy of work performed
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
  • Advanced Excel knowledge and skills, especially related to data extraction, manipulation and reporting (e.g. pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data analysis)
  • Ability to learn and use standard ERP and accounting software
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to multi-task while meeting various deadlines
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Enthusiastic, flexible and comfortable working in a team-based environment

Personal Specs and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, completion of an appropriate diploma or degree program in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5 years’ experience in accounting preferably with hands-on manufacturing industry experience.
  • Experience with payroll preparation and 3rd party payroll processing
  • Strong hands-on experience with SAP finance modules
  • Extensive understanding of Canadian accounting standards
