Senior Accountant

Job Details

We are currently looking for a driven Accountant to join Desco and be part of our team in our Head Office located in Mississauga, ON.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant will provide senior level application of accounting activities and functions, analyze financial information, make recommendations, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements, and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. This position will oversee the work activities of the Accountant and act as a resource person for department employees.

1. Work closely with the Controller and communicate recommendations based on opportunities and concerns regarding report analysis and department issues.
2. Monitor month-end accounting procedures including preparation and entry of complex journal entries.
3. Review financial statements and perform variance analysis to ensure that reasons for variances are analyzed and that necessary action is taken to correct variance.
4. Prepare and analyze payroll Actual vs. Budget Variance Analysis Report and investigate and follow up with Human Resources department to make corrections.
5. Lead annual budget process and coordinate with management team on sales and operations information.
6. Set-up and maintain Fixed Assets schedule and record monthly Depreciation.
7. Monthly reconciliation of Balance Sheet accounts, including Intercompany, for review by the Controller.
8. Perform bank reconciliation and follow up on issues.
9. Oversee the work of the Accountant for daily and monthly tasks, including training and coaching.
10. Review daily cash reconciliation reports prepared by Accountant and follow up on any unresolved issues.
11. Assist with daily treasury and cash management.
12. Support annual audit by assisting in the preparation of the quarter- and year-end audit binders and being available to provide information to the external auditors.
13. Prepare reports for departmental managers, intercompany, others as required.
14. Initiate bank transfers as needed for approval by the Controller.
15. Calculate and pay statutory payments such as HST, WSIB, Corporate Tax, etc.
16. Assist Controller with internal control to ensure the branches are following proper procedures regarding the cash sale process.
17. Balance the P&L with the Retained Earnings portion of the Balance Sheet and ensure that both reports are in balance.
18. Be involved in the annual inventory counts.
19. Perform other duties, as required based on business needs.

WHAT YOU OFFER

• Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting.
• CPA designation, or in progress.
• Minimum 3 years related experience in Accounting.
• 1 year of team lead/supervisory experience.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail.

• Prioritizing, time management, and organization skills.
