Job summary

The HGA Group is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its Calgary-area practice. The role emphasizes serving a diverse client base, preparing compilations, reviews, and audits, and mentoring junior staff.

You will collaborate with principals, managers, and clients to deliver high-quality accounting services, maintain strong client relationships, and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g., B.Com., B.BA.).
  • CA or CPA designation, or designation near completion.
  • 2+ years’ public practice experience.
  • Strong technical expertise in assurance, accounting, and tax.
  • Experience leading and supervising staff is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review Compilation, Review, and Audit engagements.
  • Prepare and review working paper files for income tax returns (personal, corporate, trust).
  • Lead on complex engagements and mentor junior staff.
  • Analyze complex financial reports and provide recommendations.
  • Perform variance analyses and account reconciliations.
  • Support tax planning and client relationship growth.

The Role

We’reon the hunt for a full-time Senior Accountant to become a part of the HGAFamily and add value to our incredible team. The ideal candidate will take on the positionof trusted liaison between principals, managers, and clients in preparing Compilations,Review and Audit engagements and assume leadership roles on complex files. TheSenior Accountant will report directly to their respective managers andpartners, however, as part of the Senior Accounting team, this individual willbe provided the opportunity to mentor our junior and intermediate-levelaccountants.

Perfect for someone who understandsthe value of customer service, this individual will enjoy working alongside themanagers to support our large range of clients and be equally as invested inwho our clients are as people, as well as their business and the 'numbers'. Ahigh level of accountability and initiative will be key to succeed in thisrole, as well as the ability to navigate and adapt to a fast-paced professionalservices environment.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Preparationand review of Compilation, Review, and Audit engagements
  • Preparation and review of working paper files for incometax returns for personal, corporate and trust returns
  • Assume leadership roles on complex engagements
  • Analyzing complex financial reports and records
  • Making recommendations based on analysis and status of reserves,assets and expenditures
  • Performing variance analyses and preparing account reconciliations
  • Ensuring timely follow-up on notices of assessment
  • Assistingwith financial and strategic planning for businesses, income tax planning,and estate planning
  • Assist principals and managers with managing a portfolioof clients, ensuring their needs are met and that relationships andaccounts grow and develop
  • Provide support to team members in related tasks andguidance to junior staff as required
  • Provide mentorship to junior and intermediate-levelaccounting staff
  • Conductingany and all other duties assigned
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduatedegree in a relevant field (i.e., B.Com., B.BA., etc.)
  • CA or CPA designation, or designation nearcompletion
  • 2+ Years’ experience in a public practice environment
  • Strong technical expertise in assurance, accounting, andtax
  • Comprehensive experience in compilation and reviewpreparation
  • Experience leading and supervising staff is an asset

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Knowledge ofrelevant accounting frameworks and file documentation best practices
  • Knowledge and experience in accounting software such asCaseWare, Profile, QuickBooks (QBO), and Sage
  • Strong computer skills (especially in Microsoft Office),and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel
