Job summary

AltaSteel is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our Finance team in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Finance, this position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, supporting audits, and driving continuous improvement across accounting processes.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation considered an asset.
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, forecasting, and audit processes.
  • Experience supporting month-end and year-end close activities.
  • Previous experience with ERP systems; Dynamics 365 experience is considered an asset.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and oversee accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
  • Lead and support month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
  • Oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and timely resolution of issues.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
  • Coordinate and support internal and external audits, including preparation of supporting documentation and resolution of audit inquiries.
  • Partner with operational leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to develop budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
  • Perform variance analysis and provide actionable insights to support business decision-making.
  • Support cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and treasury-related activities.
  • Assist with tax compliance activities, remittances, and financial regulatory requirements.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance financial reporting, operational efficiency, and internal controls.
  • Leverage financial systems and reporting tools to improve reporting capabilities and streamline processes.
  • Collaborate with departments including Operations, Procurement, and Human Resources to support organizational objectives.
  • Stay current on changes in accounting standards, financial regulations, and reporting requirements.
