Job summary

RemotePeople is seeking a Senior Associate to join its Aboriginal law litigation practice in Canada. The role focuses on Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, consultation, and governance matters, with engagement in regulatory proceedings and public law litigation.

The candidate will handle high‑level advocacy, legal research, and drafting, appearing before courts at multiple levels, and independently managing client files within a team that emphasizes continuous learning and respectful collaboration.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of litigation experience.
  • Experience appearing at various levels of court.
  • Strong advocacy, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, interpretive, research, and drafting skills.
  • Comfortable working independently while contributing to a team environment.
  • Familiarity with civil procedure.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or eligible).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute legal and litigation strategy.
  • Conduct legal research and draft correspondence, affidavits, pleadings, and applications.
  • Draft legislation for Indigenous governments and coordinate implementation of agreements.
  • Interview witnesses, prepare evidence, and prepare for discovery.
  • Appear before courts and tribunals, including arguing applications and oral submissions.
  • Facilitate community sessions on law-making and support Elders' and knowledge keepers' deliberations.
  • Prepare for trial, including developing questions and statements, and appear at all levels of court.
  • Support negotiations, including self-government, jurisdictional, and exploratory discussions.
  • Independently manage client files.
