Job Description

The Senior Ability Management Specialist provides case management support and direction to employees and stakeholders for occupational and non-occupational injuries1 and illnesses in accordance with Seaspan’s Ability Management Program. Aside from internal collaborators (i.e. Supervisors, HR, Payroll), this role interacts with healthcare professionals, and insurers (i.e. WSBC, Insurance companies, ICBC) to facilitate restoration of health and function and ultimately supports a safe and timely return to work. The Specialist also supports Seaspan’s wellness program and numerous initiatives.

Job Description

The Senior Ability Management Specialist provides case management support and direction to employees and stakeholders for occupational and non-occupational injuries1 and illnesses in accordance with Seaspan’s Ability Management Program. Aside from internal collaborators (i.e. Supervisors, HR, Payroll), this role interacts with healthcare professionals, and insurers (i.e. WSBC, Insurance companies, ICBC) to facilitate restoration of health and function and ultimately supports a safe and timely return to work. The Specialist also supports Seaspan’s wellness program and numerous initiatives.

This position is being filled in anticipation of an upcoming retirement, with the current incumbent set to retire at the end of July.

Note : Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria BC. After 90 days of on-site work and onboarding, employees will be eligible to work one day per week from home.

What You’ll Do

  • Acts as an internal resource for health & wellness concerns, answering questions and providing guidance and referrals to resources as required.
  • Educates, coordinates, performs case management activities (Employee focused)
  • Facilitates WorkSafeBC processes through prevention, early intervention, regular contact with employees, and providing information and resources as necessary.
  • Assist injured / ill employees in all aspects of their absence including early contact, case triage, initiation of a case management plan, referral / connection to early intervention resources, development and implementation of recovery plans, including RTW programs, where necessary.
  • Provides advice and recommendations to employees and managers on the suitability of job duties related to employees’ current functional status2 and engages WCB Case Managers early on in the RTW process to help ensure employee participation in the process.
  • Promotes employee health and wellness and injury prevention through individual interactions and company-wide initiatives
  • Crafts and assesses graduated return to work (GRTW) schedules. Conducts regular follow-ups and communicates with employees, supervisors and external collaborators to ensure a durable return to work
  • Conducts ergonomic assessments and job site visits as required; ability to conduct ergonomic assessments an asset.

What You’ll Bring

  • Completion of a Return-to-Work Coordinator or Disability Management Certificate through NIDMAR or CARMHA is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or health-related field desirable.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Disability Case Management in a unionized or industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of Privacy legislation related to preparing, disclosing and handling information of a confidential and / or sensitive nature.
  • Knowledge of WorkSafeBC Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Canada Labour Code.
  • Strong workplace occupational injury or illness case management experience.
  • Experience working with unionized employees, preparing medical questionnaires, interpreting medical to identify appropriate accommodations.
  • Hands-on experience in onsite disability case management, early intervention, and occupational health and safety.
  • Ability to build and implement return to work plans and permanent accommodations consistent with workplace and legislative requirements.

The estimated salary for this position is $99,000 - $121,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
