Job description

Classroom Support is excited to be working with a school in Chatham that is looking to recruit a number of Learning Support Assistants to start over the next couple of months on temporary to permanent contracts.

The school supports students aged 11-16 with SEMH. The environment can be challenging in terms of behaviour; however, the senior leadership team promotes staff who work hard and make a positive impact on students. There are significant opportunities to progress. Positions start on a supply basis with the possibility of becoming permanent after a few weeks.

The roles will initially be temporary with the potential to go permanent after a period working with the academy through our Classroom Support agency.

Essential experience includes:

  • Supporting children/young adults with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs, including challenging behaviour management.
  • Creating bonds with students who have experienced trauma and attachment difficulties, and building trust quickly.
  • Experience working within a Pupil Referral Unit, SEMH school, young offenders institution, Youth Justice system, or children's homes is advantageous.
  • Mentoring children and young adults in SEN schools or those with mental health or youth offending backgrounds is also valuable.
  • Restraint training is highly advantageous but not necessary; schools use restraint as a last resort. Attachment training is also beneficial but not essential.
  • Solid knowledge and experience supporting students with SEMH needs.
  • Understanding of supporting children within the foster system or looked-after children, including previous experience as a foster carer, is a plus.

The pay rate is £105 per day for suitable candidates, with a temp-to-perm option.

If you meet the criteria and want to make a difference for children with SEMH needs, please contact us, and we will call you back as soon as possible.

You will need a DBS on the update service or be willing to pay £63.70 for a new DBS if you do not have one, to enable placement in a school.

If you're interested in primary or mainstream school roles, contact us as well, as we are busy with SEN Teaching Assistant roles across Medway and Kent.

Additional information:

  • A sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection is essential. All applicants will undergo safer recruitment checks, including references and an Enhanced DBS check in line with DfE guidelines.
