Job description

Schedule: Part-time 32 hours, nights

Receiving general direction from the Security Director, Operations Manager, Manager of Special Investigations, Supervisor, or Charge Officer, the incumbent shall provide a safe and secure environment for all Hospital patients, visitors, and employees by enforcing Hospital security regulations and by continuously watching for and the timely reporting of any safety hazards or unusual occurrences through patrol of assigned areas. Furthermore, the incumbent shall provide protective service and response for the protection of the people and property of the Hospital and is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of the Department.

  1. Protects people and property through patrol, investigation, monitoring alarms, and surveillance cameras.
  2. Provides escorts for staff, visitors, and patients as requested.
  3. Apprehends criminal violators when necessary and appropriate.
  4. Provides emergency response to a variety of situations.
  5. Applies patient restraints as needed.
  6. Patrols assigned areas, buildings, and grounds, giving attention to those areas where security problems have occurred. Identifies unsafe conditions and improperly secured areas/property to help prevent theft, injuries, or damages to Hospital property, patients, visitors, and employees. Maintains strict confidentiality at all times.
  7. Prepares and submits written reports and daily events in a complete, timely, and accurate manner.
  8. Maintains accountability for valuables/property and other forms of evidence, ensures safekeeping, and maintains documentation.
  9. Acts as Security Dispatch Operator as needed.
  10. Acts as a first responder to HazMat incidents.
  11. Creates safety awareness among patients, visitors, and staff.
Working Conditions:

Work is fast-paced and physically demanding. Walks within the hospital and around the hospital campus; to and from parking areas and buildings on premises in all weather conditions. Runs short distances when responding to stat calls and other security emergencies; interacting with patients as needed. Stands for long periods both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Lifts, pulls, and pushes when transporting and interacting with patients. Potential hazards exist in encounters with physically aggressive patients, visitors, and others.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma required; a strong educational background (associate or bachelor's degree) in criminal justice or a related field is preferred. A combination of both experience and education will be considered.
  • 1-3 years of police, emergency services, security, or related experience preferred.
  • Valid MA driver's license or equivalent from the resident state.
  • Must pass an annual criminal background check.
  • Physical ability to lift approximately 50 pounds, walk rapidly, stand for extended periods, and withstand adverse weather conditions.
  • Training requirements include De-Escalation, Healthcare Defensive Tactics System, Handcuff Tactics, Pepper Spray Defense, First Aid/CPR/AED, C-Spine Immobilization, HazMat Levels 1-3, and IAHSS Basic Officer Certification.
  • Must maintain up-to-date training records and report errors to supervisors.
  • Preferred: Massachusetts License to Carry Class A and ability to be licensed as a Special State Police Officer under MA laws.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations and manage high-volume activity.
  • Proficiency with access control and database software, communication, and first aid equipment, with troubleshooting skills.
