Successful candidates will attend a mandatory 4-day in-class training at our Etobicoke office. A valid immunization record (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, TB skin tests 1 and 2) is required prior to onboarding.

Job Description

Working on assigned shifts, you will support the Emergency Department clinical team by proactively identifying potential violence. The Ambassador will serve as a resource within the department, identifying early signs of agitation and intervening to prevent escalation, thereby reducing violence risk.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitor and patrol emergency department waiting areas, engaging with patients, visitors, and staff to promote a positive safety culture and improve the user experience.
  • Use supportive verbal techniques and collaborate with staff to de-escalate potentially violent behavior.
  • Develop relationships with clinical and operational staff to ensure effective communication and support strategies.
  • Act as a principal contact for security within the emergency department, liaising with law enforcement and emergency responders as needed.
  • Observe and report health concerns and conduct hourly headcounts of waiting area visitors.
  • Maintain data on client contacts and support options / resources available to patients and visitors.
  • Develop personalized approaches for managing individuals at risk of violence in cooperation with stakeholders.
  • Engage security or emergency teams for physical interventions when necessary, avoiding direct physical involvement unless safety is at risk.
  • Participate in team briefings and contribute to patient behavior management planning.

Skills & Abilities

  • Sound judgment and effective interpersonal skills, including managing hostile or aggressive behavior.
  • Empathy and composure in high-stress situations.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation such as the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • Physical ability to perform duties.

Prerequisites

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Background in social work or healthcare is an asset

Education & Certification

  • Immunization records and TB skin tests

At least 1 year of security experience.
