Job description

Job Description : Working on assigned shifts, you will work 12-hour shifts providing support to the Emergency department clinical team with regards to proactive identification of the potential for violence within the ED department. The Ambassador will serve as a resource within the department specifically tasked with identifying early signs of agitation and intervening prior to escalation in an effort to reduce the likelihood of violence within the department.

Duties & Responsibilities :

  1. Continually monitors and actively patrols the emergency department waiting areas and pro-actively engages patients (awaiting treatment), visitors, and staff to develop a positive safety culture and enhance the user experience through respectful interpersonal interactions.
  2. Uses supportive verbal techniques and engages staff resources to identify strategies aimed at de-escalating potentially violent behavior.
  3. Develops relationships and maintains liaison with clinical and operational stakeholder groups (e.g., Triage, Admitting, Nursing, Social Work, Mental Health, Security, and volunteers) for effective communication and support planning.
  4. Acts as a principal contact for security services within the emergency department and liaises with emergency responders, including law enforcement and Emergency Services, when managing individuals who may pose a risk of violence.
  5. Makes observations of obvious health changes in individuals awaiting services (e.g., loss of consciousness, dizziness, labored or difficult breathing, unresponsiveness) and reports concerns to clinical staff immediately.
  6. Conducts and documents an hourly census of the number of persons in waiting areas.
  7. Maintains basic data on the number of client contacts during each shift.
  8. Knows available support options and resources (e.g., blankets, food & drink, transit passes, community resources) and liaises with staff to ensure appropriate application without conflicting with clinical needs.
  9. Develops relationships with regular patients and visitors, creating customized “Approach Plans” in consultation with stakeholders for managing individuals with potential risk of violence, establishing positive rapport.
  10. Engages site security and/or the site Code White team to manage physically aggressive or threatening behavior, unless physical intervention is necessary for safety reasons.
  11. Participates in multidisciplinary team briefings/de-briefings and contributes to patient behavior management planning.
