The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It aims to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and protect investors. As part of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate, and harmonize Canada's capital markets regulation.

The Joint Serious Offences Team (JSOT) conducts investigations into breaches of criminal and securities laws, including allegations of fraud and misconduct in securities markets. JSOT is a partnership between the ASC and the RCMP’s Integrated Market Enforcement Team, combining capital markets expertise with law enforcement skills to investigate and prosecute serious violations using the Securities Act (Alberta) and the Criminal Code of Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, JSOT, the Securities Investigator conducts financial investigations into breaches of Alberta securities law and criminal law, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Leading and supporting investigations focusing on fraud and financial crimes.
  2. Planning and conducting interviews with key individuals.
  3. Preparing court applications for financial records, trading data, and evidence.
  4. Analyzing information to identify critical details.
  5. Playing a lead or supporting role in investigations, demonstrating proficiency in both.
  6. Utilizing electronic case management, evidence tracking, and e-discovery tools daily.
  7. Compiling final case reports and disclosure packages for prosecutors or litigation counsel.
  8. Traveling within Alberta to gather evidence and conduct interviews as needed.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Post-secondary education in Law, Criminology, Business, Finance, or related fields.
  • At least eight years of investigative experience, including:
    • Five years in a regulatory agency, law enforcement, consulting, or financial institution.
    • Three years in anti-fraud, securities, financial crime, anti-money laundering, or compliance environments.
  • Knowledge of the Securities Act, Criminal Code, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and relevant law principles.
  • Experience conducting interviews of witnesses, victims, and suspects.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to progress investigations independently.
  • Resourcefulness in locating and obtaining critical information.
  • Sound judgment to assess legal, reputational, and operational risks under pressure.
  • Ability to organize complex information and communicate it clearly and precisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience handling high-profile cases and testifying in legal proceedings.
  • Exceptional writing skills for synthesizing data into compelling narratives.
  • Adaptability, creativity, and composure in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build credibility with legal and law enforcement professionals.
  • Curiosity and efficiency in work approach.
