Job summary

Northern Health is seeking a Section Head to oversee all technical operations of the designated laboratory sections. The role includes administrative, supervisory, and technical duties within a progressive culture.

Field of practice includes Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, and Transfusion Medicine. On-call rotations may require after-hours call-outs to ensure continuous lab services.

Position Summary

In accordance with the established mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, the Section Head performs administrative, supervisory, and technical duties in managing all technical operations of the designated laboratory section(s) of the multifunction lab. Performs technical duties as required.

• Field of practice for this position is: Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, and Transfusion Medicine (Science).
• This position includes participations in an on-call rotation to support 24/7 laboratory services. On-call assignments are scheduled on a rotating basis and may require return to site for call-outs outside of regular working hours'.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work:

Monday to Friday, Days - 09:00 to 17:00

Qualfications

• Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
• Graduation from a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Technology, plus five (5) years of recent, related experience in assigned section(s), including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

• Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions.
• Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using, oral written and computer communication means. Demonstrated ability to effectively resolve conflict.
• Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach.
• Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
• Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups.
• Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Meditech and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e‑mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
