Job summary

Quinte West is seeking a Roads Labourer to support Public Works with day-to-day manual tasks under the Road Supervisor. Duties include cleaning, material handling, and assisting with road maintenance and construction activities.

The role requires Grade 12, a valid G license, and strong safety awareness in municipal infrastructure projects. Evening or weekend work may be required, and access to city vehicles may be provided.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 Graduation Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class G Driver’s Licence with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to undertake manual labouring activities related to municipal infrastructure.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Responsibilities

  • Shoveling.
  • Washing.
  • Raking (except for raking of asphalt).
  • Sweeping.
  • Picking.
  • Dusting and cleaning.
  • Placing seed and sod.
  • Operating non-power tools (hand saw, bolt cutters, etc.).
  • Traffic control/flag person.
  • Debris, garbage, yard waste pick up, etc.
  • Tree and brush trimming (hand saw) and clearing brush/trees.
  • Erecting formwork.
  • Placing asphalt.
  • Installation of signs, guard rails, posts and cables, etc.
  • Painting signs, guard rails, posts, curbs, etc.
  • General yard maintenance.
  • Changing of lights.
  • Moving equipment and furniture.
  • Picking up materials and supplies.
  • Erecting banners, flags, seasonal decorations.
  • Adjusting frames for catch basins.
  • Adjusting frames for maintenance hole covers.
  • Acting as wing person during winter control.
  • Operating City vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Carrying out general labouring assignments.
  • Be aware of and follow OHSA and City policies.
  • Being courteous to the public at all times.

Position:Roads Labourer
Department:Public Works and Environmental Services
Reports to: Road Supervisor
Purpose and Scope:

Reporting to the Road Supervisor, the Roads Labourer is responsible for providing manual labour in the completion of tasks assigned by the Road Supervisor on a day-to-day basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

The position will require:

  • Minimum Grade 12 Graduation Diploma or equivalent.

  • Effective communication skills.

  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience in a construction/maintenance field.
Decision Making:
  • The position has minimal responsibility for decision making affecting the department.
Supervision:
  • Not applicable.
Work Environment:
  • Roads outside work a requirement.
  • Evening, night and weekend hours may be required.
