Position title: Seafloor Mapping and SBP Scientist
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Project _ (E.g., Scientist) Series - Non-exempt Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $39.32/ hour - $43.16/hour.
Percent time: Variable (between 25%- 65% time). The initial appointment will be made at 25% time and may be increased should additional funding be made available.
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.
Position duration: Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment is contingent upon performance and funding availability.

The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at UCSC invites applications for a Seafloor Mapping and Sub-Bottom Profiling (SBP) Scientist. Under Dr. Daniel Orange's supervision, the scientist will work on a project evaluating the capability of hull-mounted multibeam and SBP systems to identify objects on or buried beneath the seafloor.
Responsibilities include cruise planning, data acquisition, processing, interpretation, seismic data processing, and visualization. The candidate will participate in Sea Acceptance Tests and oversee vessel Dimensional Survey activities, collaborating with US Coast Guard, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, WHOI, and other partners.
This position involves off-campus fieldwork, including travel to shipyards and research cruises across the U.S. east coast, Alaska, and the Western Pacific. Remote work within the U.S. is possible when not fielding.
Applicants with experience in multibeam bathymetry, backscatter analysis, high-resolution seismic systems, and vessel operation are encouraged to apply.
