Headquartered in Kanata, Ontario, BWXT Medical Ltd. employs over 300 highly-skilled people in Kanata and Vancouver, British Columbia.

We are currently recruiting for a Scientist, Radiochemist for our production facility in Kanata, Ontario.

Location: On-site; 447 March Road, Kanata, ON.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs and is responsible for varied scientific or applied scientific functions in the design, development, testing, and commissioning of project outputs, commonly identified as active pharmaceutical ingredients of radioisotopes. Has responsibility for the technical performance of development projects or developed processes. Performs review and approval of process changes as Technical Design Authority, in accordance with company Quality procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reports to the Manager or Director of Research and Development. Has accountability for project activities within budgetary constraints and reporting guidelines.
  2. Makes independent decisions and initiates actions within project parameters and guidelines; is expected to make recommendations for the solution of problems affecting the objectives of own projects or those of others. Actions are defined by established functional practice and procedure.
  3. May represent the Company on committees, boards, panels, study groups, and/or commissions - national and international.
  4. Identifies, plans, and carries out, or is responsible for the performance of, necessary research, design, and development associated with assigned projects.
  5. Prepares estimates for work to be performed including direct and indirect costs.
  6. Supervises assigned staff on projects.
  7. Coordinates tasks with others, both internal to and outside of the company in order to achieve project objectives.
  8. Provides technical assistance and guidance to others, including the assessment of impact of changes to the validated state of products and technical justifications in support of quality dispositions.
  9. May perform hands-on technical tasks for new projects to aid in the proceduralization of processes and tasks.
  10. May be assigned the role of Technical Design Authority related to the field of expertise, to authorize changes and approve procedures, technical reports, and specifications.

QUALIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering, plus at least 5 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Must have fully proficient technical knowledge within a scientific specialty (radiochemistry, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, metallurgy) and appreciation of basic principles in peripheral fields.
  • Requires a proven record of high-quality research in the identified area of scientific specialty.
  • Should have a demonstrated capacity to lead and motivate co-workers in project-related activities.
  • Should have a detailed knowledge of relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Requires an understanding of factors that contribute to the team's success and how the team's activities impact other teams.
  • Ability to solve problems that are varied and complex. Solutions may occasionally require modification of existing concepts, but must comply with regulations/standards.
  • Past experience in radiochemical separations, specifically for actinium, radium, thorium, and uranium, is highly valued.

The pay range for this position in Ontario (CA-ON) is expected to be between $82,000.00 and $126,000.00 per year. The total compensation package may also include a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided once the selected candidate receives an offer of employment and are subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
