An exciting three-year appointment, with the opportunity for renewal, exists for an Early Career Scientist (Scientist II) at Women’s College Hospital. This new scientist role will support and help develop a transition related surgery research program, reporting to the VP of Academics.

Summary of Duties:

  • Develop a productive and innovative research program that generates new ideas, concepts, and/or testable hypotheses related to transition related surgery (TRS)
  • Provide scientific leadership for an emerging research team
  • Develop a national data strategy to incorporate patient reported outcomes for TRS
  • Develop longitudinal cohort studies or registries regarding outcomes after TRS and longitudinal health outcomes (eg quality of life, aging, mental health, complications of care, general health status, and medical conditions such as cancer), the impact of hormones and surgeries on cancer rates and outcomes in the trans and gender diverse community (e.g. breast cancer after gender affirming mastectomies; prostate cancer after vaginoplasty, etc.)
  • Obtain ongoing tri-council (e.g. CIHR) peer-reviewed grant funding as a principal investigator for research activities at Women’s College Research & Innovation Institute (WCRI)
  • Publish senior-authored peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Apply scientific expertise and knowledge to support scholarly outputs for their research projects.
  • Lead knowledge translation efforts to synthesize actionable scientific insights across their research projects.
  • Critically review protocols, reports, and manuscripts prepared by analyzing data and reviewing underlying assumptions.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborations with health system partners
  • Participate actively in the collective activities of WCRI (attend and participate in rounds, scientist meetings, committees, etc.) and report activities as requested.
  • Build collaborative relationships with scientists, researchers, and institutions.
  • Participate and present on research at relevant conferences and meetings.
  • Be responsible for all aspects of research study development, funding initiation, execution, analysis, interpretation, and presentation/publication of results.
  • Supervise graduate students and other research trainees as appropriate for the level.
  • Be fiscally responsible for the support of his/her academic activities including procurement of salary/stipend for technical and academic member(s) of his/her team.
  • Acknowledge the Women’s College Research & Innovation Institute, Women’s College Hospital in all publications and presentations.
  • Participate in the hiring, managing, and review of fellows and research staff, as required.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Hold a PhD in a health-related discipline as well as have postdoctoral research experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with populations that are vulnerable or under-represented
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating sex, gender, and social determinants of health in a research context
  • Eligible for appointment (or currently appointed) to an appropriate University of Toronto Department(s) at or above the level of Assistant Professor
  • Has at least 3-5 years’ experience in a research-intensive position either within the context of a graduate research program or following successful completion of a graduate program
  • Experience developing research objectives, selection of study design, sampling strategies, sample size calculations, and development of analysis plans
  • A proven record of scientific and applied dissemination accomplishments in implementation science (publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at significant conferences, increasing leadership experience in research, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire research funding through peer-reviewed granting mechanisms
  • Excellent understanding of research design and research ethics
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills; works well independently, uses good judgment, and takes initiative
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to the Ontario Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated leadership approach and leadership skills in research-focused environments
  • Good work and attendance record required
