The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is the national voice for women’s health in Canada with a mission to lead the advancement of women’s health through excellence and collaborative professional practice.

The SOGC has over 4,000 members, comprised of : obstetricians; gynaecologists; family physicians; nurses; midwives and allied health professionals working in the field of sexual and reproductive health.

Since 1944, the SOGC continues to be a leading national and international authority on sexual and reproductive health and on evidence-based training and education. The SOGC leads the development of 12–17 clinical practice guidelines per year and hosts three regional continuing medical education meetings, and an Annual Clinical and Scientific Conference. The SOGC also coordinates and hosts in-person and virtual academic programs for participants at all stages of their career : medical students, residents and practicing health professionals.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Clinical Content and Research Manager, the Scientific Writer is responsible for the supporting scientific literature reviews, evidence synthesis, and content updates for education and training material for the SOGC’s obstetrical training programs. The Writer will work closely members of the SOGC’s expert committees, evidence review groups, and the Clinical Content and Research Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes scientific and clinical evidence
  • Drafts, reviews and edits clinical and scientific content for SOGC materials
  • Liaises with guideline authors, evidence review groups, and content leads to communicate findings and facilitates discussion and decisions on required content updates
  • Works with graphic designer to create or update illustrations and algorithms
  • Requests and obtains permissions for images, tables etc. for use in content
  • Updates the references in both the English and French for content
  • Formats and finalizes content for publication
  • Coordinates the timely translation of all documentation with the translation vendor
  • Manages content update process and timeline to ensure that the documentation is completed on time to meet deadlines
  • Ensures consistency across all documents
  • Supports the editorial process, ensuring content accuracy, clarity, and consistency with evidence-based standards.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and KEY SKILLS

  • College or University degree in a related discipline with 5 years’ experience; MSc in a health-related field preferred
  • Three years of experience beyond basic academic requirements (i.e. beyond writing a thesis)
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality documents such as guidelines, clinical training materials, and scientific reports.
  • Strong proficiency with publishing tools and reference management software (e.g., EndNote).
  • Expertise in navigating and interpreting clinical literature, protocols, and data from various sources (e.g., clinical trials, systematic reviews).
  • Exceptional command of English grammar, syntax, style, and scientific communication.
  • Strong scientific / medical writing skills and a firm understanding of medical terms evidenced by good quality writing of medical communications and / or publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Adaptability to changing or evolving policies and priorities as well as the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to gather, understand, interpret, process and summarize complex information
  • Ability to navigate clinical literature, clinical protocols, clinical study reports, investigator brochures, publications and medical congress material
  • Ability to create effective presentations from raw data
  • Ability to work independently after receiving appropriate guidance
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a highly matrixed cross-functional team
  • Experienced in working collaboratively across cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams
  • Bilingualism (English / French) is an asset
  • ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Based in the Ottawa region and available to work in the SOGC office two or three days per week
  • Ability to work weekends and overtime.
  • Some travel may be required.
