Education & Experience

  • MSW (Clinical Specialty or equivalent training/education), or, MA (Clinical Psychology, Master’s Degree in Child and Youth Care and/or comparable graduate degree at Master’s level (i.e. Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology).
  • Minimum of one year experience in counselling high risk youth.
  • Experience planning and running independent, family, and group sessions.
  • Build capacity and services in mental health for students, parents, and staff.
  • Work closely with members of the school community consisting of school counsellor, LSS staff, Youth Care Workers and Administrative Staff.
  • Attend School Based Team meetings as needed to provide feedback and advice on students requiring mental health supports.
  • Liaise with community partners to support the mental health needs of students.
  • Co - facilitate groups for students with the school counsellor.
  • Provide mental health education to parents and guardians of children with mental health challenges.
  • Attend Integrated Care team Meetings
  • Consult with the school on Threat Assessments and Suicide Assessments.
  • Provide individual, family and group sessions as required.
  • Build the capacity of school staff (counsellor, YCW) to run groups at school.
  • Eligible for B.C. Certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of parental mental illness and its impact on Children and Youth and able to facilitate appropriate programming.
  • Strong knowledge of Abbotsford’s CYMH services, as well as knowledge of community supports available to benefit vulnerable students and families.

  • Classroom Management: Create and maintain an optimal learning environment for each student while managing student behavior and classroom dynamics.
  • Facilitation & Engagement: Ability to capture and maintain students’ interest, effort, participation and enthusiasm for both the content and the process of learning
  • Assessment & Coaching: Utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learning including the use of formative and summative assessment strategies.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectives
  • Caring & Inclusiveness: Create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all students
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in our ability to adjust and adapt to changing circumstances
