Job description

We are currently hiring a Diabetes Care Technician (DCT)

We are committed to supporting CHEO in helping children with diabetes manage their medical, nutritional, and psychosocial needs to empower them to live their best lives.

The Diabetes Support Technician provides in-person, at-school insulin administration and/or diabetes support, in collaboration with a virtual nurse and an SE Diabetes Care School Program Facilitator.

1 hour per day only

Role and Responsibilities:
  1. Receives education specific to child development, interpersonal communication, diabetes, emergency management, insulin administration, and insulin pumps, in addition to child-specific training.
  2. Provides in-person, at-school insulin injections and/or diabetes care, as per the Individual Care Plan, with guidance from a virtual nurse.
  3. Attends program huddles with the hospital care team, as required.
  4. Works collaboratively with the care team, including the child and family, school staff, and leadership.
  5. Escalates any risks or issues as appropriate.
  6. Maintains and submits accurate client records.
  7. Uses communication tools effectively to communicate with team members.
  8. Participates in program evaluation and process improvement.
Minimum Requirements:
  1. Current CPR certification.
  2. An interest in supporting children with diabetes.
  3. Effective communication skills (verbal and written) and good judgment.
  4. Ability to lift up to 25 kilograms.
  5. Ability to perform lifting and bending in awkward positions when assisting clients.
  6. Access to own transportation.
