Qualifications

Job Qualifications

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools requires a temporary full-time School Counselor to support our schools and students. This position will begin as soon as possible through to April 24, 2026; with possibility of extension. This assignment is for experienced candidates who are able to work with a range of students from ECS (early learners) to grade 12.

This person will work collaboratively as a team with their administrators, teachers, staff, students and parents. The successful candidate will have specific knowledge and training in school counselling and be able to support regular classroom teachers with specialized teaching strategies in regard to supporting mental health.

Responsibilities
  • Having and maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding current and developing best practices in the field of student mental health and wellness
  • Working with their school administration team to assess crises as they arise and developing an appropriate plan for supporting those impacted by the crisis
  • Providing training and education to staff in using various universal instructional approaches and strategies for communication and social skills, friendship/relationship development, conflict resolution and self-regulation to build students' resiliency and independence through a trauma-informed lens
  • Providing small group and individual support for students who require communication and social skills, friendship/relationship development, self-regulation to build student success and independence
  • Referrals for therapeutic supports to other community agencies who support children and families who have children with emotional and mental health needs
  • Supplementing the religion/health programs, enhancing student social skills, perspective taking and empathy development in whole class or small group settings
  • Coordinating development of Instructional Support Plans, and ensuring regular and timely completion of behavior plans for students with behavior disorders
  • Demonstrating compassion and using a variety of effective communication techniques when communicating to staff, parents, and community agencies
  • Having the ability to work independently and make decisions while keeping the supervisors apprised of sensitive situations
  • Consulting with the Division Psychologist and/or other school counsellors and engaging in the ethical decision-making process when encountering ethical concerns
  • Advocating for students' wellness within the school and the community to increase education and awareness of mental health and wellness
  • Providing career guidance and scheduling for high school students
  • Providing post-secondary information, including scholarships, applications, employment opportunities
Candidate Requirements

Successful applicant should either hold or be working toward a Master in Guidance and Counseling or a Master of Social Work with advanced practice in the assessment and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders/conditions. They must be eligible for or in process of obtaining membership in an applicable accrediting body.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Reference Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check. FMCSD will contact past and present employers for references.
