Job summary

St. Michaels University School in Victoria, BC seeks a permanent, full-time School Bus Driver to transport students, faculty and staff to activities, with shifts including mornings, afternoons and occasional overnight trips.

Minimum BC Class 2 license with Air Brake Endorsement and First Aid/CPR Level C are required. Three years driving experience and a clean driving record are expected, along with a calm, respectful approach to working with youth.

Qualifications

• Minimum three years professional driving experience; bus driving preferred.
• BC Class 2 license with Air Brake Endorsement; clean driving record.
• First Aid and CPR Level C certification required.
• Ability to communicate respectfully with students, staff and families.
• Ability to read maps and adapt to route changes.

Responsibilities

• Transport students, faculty and equipment to and from school and events.
• Monitor bus etiquette and ensure safe loading/unloading procedures.
• Report maintenance issues to Transportation Manager.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections per BC regulations.
• Keep interior/exterior of bus tidy and secure bus when not in use.
• Provide orientation to temporary/new bus drivers.
• Respond to emergencies and assist with basic first aid if needed.
• Comply with Highway Traffic Acts and Safety Procedures.

School Bus Driver

Permanent, Full-Time (1.0 FTE), starting as soon as possible

Under the direction of the Transportation Manager, the bus driver is responsible for transporting students, as well as faculty and staff members, to and from school and extracurricular activities in a timely and safe manner. Hours of work vary, including shorter shifts, early mornings, afternoons, and some overnight trips.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations:

• Transports students and/or equipment on local, out of town and overnight field trips in accordance with routes and schedules.
• Directs, monitors and enforces proper bus etiquette, and ensures compliance with safe loading, riding and unloading procedures.
• Communicates with Transportation Manager regarding student behaviour that requires follow up.
• Knowledge of electronic devices such as smart phone and tablet, used to access work schedule and for pre-trip bus inspections.
• Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with British Columbia (BC) Motor Vehicle Act, BC Air Brake Manual, National Safety Code and BC Professionals Drivers Manual.
• Reports maintenance issues to Transportation Manager.
• Ensures interior and exterior tidiness of school bus.
• Provides orientation to temporary /new bus drivers.
• Secures bus when not in use.
• May be required to perform emergency first aid.
• Complies with all Highway Traffic Acts and Safety Procedures.
• Other duties as required.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interests:

• Minimum valid British Columbia Class 2 driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement.
• Minimum Emergency (Basic) First Aid and CPR Level C certificate.
• Minimum three years professional driving experience. Bus driving experience preferred.
• Maintain a clean driver’s abstract.
• Experience working with youth is an asset.
• Must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with all bus users and stakeholders.
• Ability to read and interpret maps.
• Flexibility to deal with changing situations such as route detours.
