Position Purpose & Overview

St. John’s School (SJS) is seeking a qualified and experienced School Bus Driver. This is a casual on-call position.

St. John’s School provides school bus service to students on weekday mornings to school and for extracurricular activities. The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transport of students and staff members in the School’s owned vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities and duties are inclusive of, but not limited to:

  • Perform pre- and post-trip safety inspection of the school buses according to school guidelines and government transportation regulations; ensures the school buses are mechanically sound.
  • Plan driving routes in collaboration with the Associate Director of Facilities.
  • Ensure school buses are fuelled and thoroughly cleaned.
  • Safely transport school bus passengers to desired destinations on a schedule:
    • Mornings (daily): pick up students and staff along the predetermined route, bringing them to the School.
    • On an as-needed basis: drive staff and students on field trips, extra-curricular activities, sports events.
    • Occasional on-call: unscheduled transportation needs or emergencies.
    • Ensure that students follow appropriate behavioural and safety standards while on the bus and assist students with getting on and off the bus, when required.
    • Abide by traffic laws and report accidents immediately; seek help from police in emergency situations.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • Unrestricted Class 2 BC Commercial License with Air Brakes, to drive a school bus.
  • A good knowledge of Metro Vancouver geography locations, roads, and traffic patterns.
  • Previous bus driving experience and experience with using air brakes.
  • Demonstrated safe driving history as represented by a Drivers Abstract ICBC.
  • Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • A Basic First Aid certificate is considered an asset.

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-aid training provided by St. John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for the vulnerable sector.
  • Clearance on criminal record checks for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • The ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.

Job Information

  • Casual, part-time, permanent position starting August 25th, 2025.
  • Work location: on-site.
  • Hourly pay rate of $31.80 – $32.91, determined on experience.
  • 4% vacation pay

  • Key Interactions:
    • Internal: Faculty, non-teaching employees, payroll administrator, Associate Director of Facilities, and School Principals.
    • External: Parents/guardians, alumni, students/parents of other independent schools, and external facility members for field trips/sports events.
