Job summary

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) is seeking a SCADA-focused engineer to help keep critical pipeline operations safe and reliable.

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Systems, you will monitor, troubleshoot, and analyze SCADA systems, support configuration, and work with cross-functional teams to improve efficiency. The role emphasizes problem solving, practical system improvements, and collaboration across engineering and field services, with after-hours support possible and a hybrid work

Qualifications

  • 3 years of programming experience.
  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (see below).
  • Strong programming skills in C++, C#, VB, SQL.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication; analytical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, maintain, and update SCADA systems, including databases and tags.
  • Monitor performance and perform routine maintenance and software updates.
  • Integrate SCADA with accounting, scheduling, and other systems.
  • Troubleshoot issues with cross-functional teams and document changes.
  • Develop user guides and standard operating procedures for SCADA operations.
  • Support system changes through the MOC process and ensure approvals.

Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. (TNPI) operates regulated pipelines to safely transport the refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, aviation, and heating fuel) used by Canadian businesses and consumers every day. These pipelines connect refineries in Edmonton to Calgary, including the Calgary International Airport; and refineries in Nanticoke, Ont., and Montreal to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with lateral pipelines to Ottawa as well as to Pearson International Airport and Pierre-Elliot Trudeau International Airport. POSITION SUMMARY:

Play a key role in keeping critical pipeline operations safe, reliable, and connected. As a key member reporting to the Manager, Engineering Systems, you will support the safe operation and reliable performance of our Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. In this role, you will be accountable for monitoring, troubleshooting, and analyzing SCADA systems, as well as assisting with system configuration and maintenance and working with cross-functional teams to improve operational efficiency. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Configure, maintain, and update SCADA systems, including databases, tags, and system settings.
  • Monitor system performance and complete routine maintenance, including software updates, patches, and system health checks.
  • Integrate SCADA systems with business and operational applications, including accounting, scheduling, and other systems.
  • Troubleshoot SCADA issues and identify solutions in partnership with Process Engineering, Project Engineering, Field Services, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation for SCADA configurations, processes, procedures, and system changes.
  • Develop user guides, manuals, and other resources to help users effectively navigate and use SCADA functionality.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for SCADA operations and maintenance.
  • Coordinate system changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process, ensuring changes are reviewed, documented, and approved.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to identify system requirements and deliver effective SCADA integrations and improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance and respond to stakeholder questions and system-related needs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, functionality, and performance, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor developments in SCADA technology, industry practices, and emerging solutions to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Apply established cybersecurity standards and procedures to protect SCADA systems from unauthorized access, threats, and disruption.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 3 years of programming experience.
  • Post-secondary education in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical or a related discipline.
  • Strong programming skills for C++, C#, VB, and SQL.
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written), analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability tomanage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • A safety mindset to guide decision-making in SCADA and support system programming and maintenance, considering the impact on safety, the environment, dependability, and people.
  • Ability to think critically, evaluate complicated data sets, and spot patterns or trends to efficiently troubleshoot and resolve difficulties.

Preference for:

  • SCADA software experience (AVEVA OASyS DNA).
  • Software and hardware experience.
