Job Summary

The Sales Tax Analyst will play a key role in ensuring WM complies with various federal and provincial tax rules and regulations. This position will support the WM Canadian Tax Team including sales tax invoice review and approval compliance audits research and ad-hoc projects. This is an opportunity to work in an environment where your actions insights and analysis will directly contribute to the success of the tax function and tax savings for WM.

Location : 4210 King Street East Kitchener ON

This role is a Hybrid role. Monday - Thursday are office days Fridays are WFH days.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Actively perform the Canadian sales tax review function. This will include the review and approval of selected Canadian transactions for sales tax compliance and working with internal and external stakeholders to make corrections and adjustments as required
  • Reconcile and analyze monthly tax account balances and details to confirm their validity and investigate variances
  • Accurately prepare and file all assigned commodity tax returns prior to the legislated deadlines as well as review and reconcile related notices of assessment
  • Assist in the response to federal and provincial government sales tax audits including the gathering of information and drafting of responses (and gathering information) to government audit queries
  • Work with the Director of Tax on special ad-hoc projects such as process improvements risk reviews and recovery opportunities demonstrating flexibility and a desire to learn new areas of direct and indirect tax

Qualifications

A. Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in Accounting Finance Tax Business Administration or similar area of study
  • No experience with zero to three years of previous experience.
  • B. Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree or equivalent experience in Accounting Finance Tax Business Administration or similar area of study
  • Three (3) years of previous experience
  • Certificates Licenses Registrations or Other Requirements

  • None required
  • Other Knowledge Skills or Abilities Required

  • Detail-oriented individual with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated individual that works well as part of a team but is also able to be a strong individual contributor
  • Strong organizational skills to plan and prioritize workflow
  • Willingness to take responsibility for assigned work areas and be held accountable for all assigned tasks
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively correspond with internal colleagues across functions and external customers vendors and other stakeholders
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word PowerPoint Outlook)
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g. Oracle Cloud) and COUPA is an asset
  • Existing Canadian sales tax knowledge is an asset
